The new acolyte of Thoth has appropriated a set of scuffed but basically intact studded leather armor from one of the slain archers who were members of the Gilded.
The party is standing over the remains of the Gilded and looking into the newly opened Hall of Cylinders. The Resonance Chisel, which Aele deactivated to save the archive, lies nearby.
The New Threshold: The Weight of Ma'at seal has been bypassed. Before you lies the Master Index and the vast collection of the Thothian Archive.
Thistle’s Insight: From his position at the entrance of the Archive, Thistle has identified the three cylinders (44-G, 89-B, and 112-D) through his manifested psionic potential:
- Cylinder 44-G: Records regarding the "Biological Preservation of the Violet Eye."
- Cylinder 89-B: A tactical map of the "Pump Station" and its hidden bypasses.
- Cylinder 112-D: An ancient treatise on "The Weight of Ma'at" and the Gosterwick lineage.
Dorn steps forward, his eyes scanning the floor, walls, and the intricate metalwork of the portal where the Weight of Ma'at seal previously held firm. With his sword Swift drawn, he carefully inspects the threshold of the Hall of Cylinders for any lingering resonance devices or mechanical triggers.
Dorn’s thorough investigation reveals no pressure plates or tripwires at the immediate entrance. He notes faint vibrations in the stonework, likely a fading echo from the Resonance Chisel Aele recently deactivated, rather than a new threat.
Dorn looks at Aele. "I can't find any mechanical traps, but magical ones? That's more your bailiwick."
Aele nods solemnly, stepping up to the threshold where Dorn stands. He raises the Heart-Seed Scarab, which pulses with a faint, amber light as he begins to scan the air for the telltale shimmer of Thothian abjurations.
As a 5th level Wizard-Priest with the Savant knack, Aele is finely tuned to the magical signatures of the Thothian Empire. While holding the Heart-Seed Scarab, Aele has Advantage on checks related to the Thothian Empire.
He detects no active offensive glyphs or "Weight of Ma'at" style seals blocking the path. However, he senses a powerful Divination aura permeating the entire Hall of Cylinders—the Archive itself "watches" those who enter to ensure the records are handled with reverence.
Aele says, "The way is clear of lethal spells, Dorn. But be warned—the Archive is 'awake.' It knows we are here, and it likely tracks every cylinder we remove from its shelf."
Aele steps cautiously into the rows of the Hall of Cylinders, his Heart-Seed Scarab held aloft to light the way through the towering stacks of ancient records. As he moves toward the designated shelf, he feels the weight of the "divination aura" he previously sensed—the archive’s silent, watchful eye following his every move.
Aele locates the brass-capped cylinder containing the tactical map of the Pump Station. As his fingers touch the metal, a faint hum resonates through his arm, but no trap triggers. This map is expected to reveal hidden bypasses and the structural layout of the station the party recently traversed.
Aele also secures the "heavy" record concerning The Weight of Ma'at and the Gosterwick lineage. Thistle’s psionic intuition was correct; the cylinder feels unusually dense, perhaps containing the legal and magical precedents that justify the Gosterwick High Magistrate’s current Letter of Marque.
As Aele pulls the second cylinder from its slot, the rhythmic "ticking" of the Archive's internal clockwork shifts in tempo. A soft, grinding sound of stone-on-stone echoes from deeper within the hall, and Thistle gasps, his eyes clouding over as his latent psionics flare again.
"Aele! Wait," Thistle whispers, clutching his head. "By taking those... you've changed the sequence. The Archive is re-indexing. Something is moving toward us from the direction of the Violet Eye records."
Aele’s hand tightens around the brass cylinders as the grinding stone echoes through the hall. He begins a swift but measured retreat toward the threshold where Dorn and Cabe stand ready.
Cabe’s question cuts through the tension, prompting a quick mental inventory of recent spoils. "The gland!" Aele realizes. "The stink-bomb gland: it could blind or disorient the Eye's psychic or
physical vision. Cabe, I think you're carrying it."
The sound of grinding stone grows louder from the direction of the Violet Eye records. Thistle’s eyes remain clouded in a psionic trance as he whispers, "It's not just a mechanism... it's a protector. Aele, it's moving through the sub-floor!"
Cabe reaches into his pack and retrieves the "Stink-Bomb" Gland, his fingers gripping the pungent organ as he prepares to use it should the guardian breach the floor. Dorn shifts his weight, Swift held in a low guard, his Defensive and Fleet knacks making him a blur of readiness.
As Aele reaches the threshold, the grinding sound from the sub-floor reaches a crescendo. The stone tiles a few yards ahead of you begin to slide and rotate—the Archive is literally rearranging its physical geography.
Aele successfully brings Cylinder 89-B (Pump Station Map) and Cylinder 112-D (Gosterwick Lineage) back to the safety of the threshold.
Thistle's psionic "heat" signature moves rapidly toward the gap, then suddenly he loses it and notices a headache. His gift is still nascent.
A segment of the floor drops away, revealing a stone-clad construct—an Archive Warden—designed to recover misplaced records. It seems to view Aele's "unauthorized" removal of the cylinders as a theft.
Tactical Advantage: Cabe's readiness with the Stink-Bomb Gland gives the party an opportunity to disorient the creature before it fully emerges.
The Warden's head—a faceted crystal resembling a massive, unblinking eye—crests the floor level. It emits a low, resonant frequency that vibrates the very stone of the chamber and the marrow of its inhabitants' bones.
Cabe hurls the "Stink-Bomb" Gland with practiced precision directly into the rotating stone aperture where the Archive Warden is emerging.
As the gland strikes the stone, it ruptures, releasing a thick, yellowish miasma of concentrated organic rot. The Warden’s crystal "eye" flares with a harsh, violet light as it attempts to process the sudden chemical intrusion.
The Archive Warden, which likely relies on delicate atmospheric and resonance sensors, is visibly disoriented. It emits a grinding, mechanical screech as it falters in its climb.
The cloud of foul-smelling gas provides the party with Concealment. Any attacks the Warden attempts this round will likely be at a significant disadvantage. With the construct coughing out puffs of violet sparks and stalling in the sub-floor, the Brothers of the Deep have a clear opening.
Dorn waits a second for Cabe to fire his bow, then wades in targeting the creature's crystal sensor. Meanwhile, Aele takes Thistle by the arm and urges him to retreat.
The Brothers of the Deep coordinate with lethal efficiency as the yellow miasma of the stink-bomb fills the threshold of the Hall of Cylinders.
Cabe’s Cover Fire: Cabe looses an arrow from his bow, the shaft whistling through the yellow cloud to draw the Warden's attention. He maintains his Blood-Bind with Dorn and Aele, ensuring any retaliation from the construct is distributed among the group.
Dorn, utilizing his Fleet knack for a quick opening, wades into the stinging vapors. He swings Swift in a powerful arc, leveraging his Great Strike bonus to target the Warden’s faceted crystal sensor. The +1 magical blade bites into the stone-clad frame, aiming to shatter the construct's "eye" while it is disoriented by the gland's stench.
Aele grips Thistle’s arm, pulling the apprentice back toward the Hall of Records. He keeps the Heart-Seed Scarab held high, his primary focus being the safe extraction of the Pump Station Map and the Gosterwick Lineage records.
Thistle stumbles back, his psionic trance fading into a look of sheer terror as the mechanical screech of the Warden echoes through the chamber.
Cabe fires his bow into the yellow miasma.
To-Hit Roll: Cabe rolls 18 and 7 (Advantage).
Using the 18, and adding his Dexterity bonus and
Great Strike knack, he easily strikes a vulnerable
joint in the Warden's stone plating.
Damage" 7
The arrow chips away a fragment of the construct's shoulder, drawing its attention just as Dorn closes the distance.
Dorn rolls 15 and 19 (Advantage).
Taking the 19, he adds +5 (Str+3, Great Strike +1, Swift +1).
A total of 24 is a critical-level strike against the Warden's sensor.
Damage Calculation: Dorn's longsword Swift deals 1d8 damage.
Roll: 7. Bonuses: +1 (Str), +1 (Great Strike), +1 (Swift).
Total Damage: 10 damage. The Result:
Dorn’s blade crashes into the crystal eye with a spray of violet sparks. A large crack spiderwebs across the Warden’s sensor, and its mechanical screeching turns into a low, dying whine. It is severely damaged and struggling to track its targets. The construct begins to lash out blindly with stone-carved appendages.
Dorn hits the guardian again with a powerful overhand blow. His blade sinks deep into the spider-webbed crack he created in the crystal sensor. With a sharp twist, he shatters the core of the faceted eye. The Warden’s stone body siezes, violet light venting violently from its joints before it collapses into a heap of inanimate masonry and gears.
The immediate threat is neutralized, and the yellow cloud of the stink-bomb begins to dissipate. As the Warden "dies," the Silver Heart-Feeding Locket around Dorn’s neck begins to pulse with a cold, rhythmic light. According to its properties, the locket must be "fed" the final breath of a formidable foe (at least 2 Hit Dice) to activate its protective power. While the Warden was a construct, its "life-force" was tied to the ancient Thothian resonance now leaking from its shattered core.
Dorn kneels beside the shattered remains of the Archive Warden. As the violet resonance leaks from the cracked crystal sensor like a dying gasp, he holds the Silver Heart-Feeding Locket toward the fading light.
The locket "feeds" on the essence of the fallen construct. The translucent green agate of the Heart-Seed Scarab in Aele's hand pulses in sympathetic resonance as the locket absorbs the energy.
