The Annals of Glen Forkovian

The Brothers have successfully navigated the "Priest's Path," recovered a Thothian Master Word, and survived the shifting floor of the Archives. This daring heist of a divine relic deserves a significant reward.

As the floor of the Hall of Cylinders dissolved into a ghostly mist, the Brothers of the Deep executed a daring escape that has brought them to the precipice of their mission's conclusion.

The Great Escape & The Archive's Gift

  • The Ghost-Floor Crossing: With the floor vanishing beneath them, Dorn spent a Fortune Point to lead a high-stakes dash. Supported by Thistle’s psionic levitation, the party became nearly weightless, skipping across the translucent stone patches as the Reservoir Kraken lashed out from the dark waters below.
  • The Master Word: Before the hall collapsed, Aele successfully retrieved a matte-black lead cylinder. Through the Heart-Seed Scarab, he was imbued with the Solar Binding, a Thothian Master Word specifically designed to restrain fungal and rot-based horrors.
  • The Secondary Lift: The heroes reached the solid bronze platform of the priest's lift just as the archives plunged into the reservoir. Thistle maintained his mental focus (passing a DC 9 Con check), ensuring the Prism of the Deep remained safely in his grasp.

The Ascent into the Cistern

The lift began its mechanical grind up the primary cistern shaft. As they ascended, the heroes witnessed the extent of the Sovereign’s rot: thick, black "sludge-moss" coating the interior walls, threatening to choke the water supply of Arden Vul.

Near the top of the shaft, a Beastman Shaman of Set was discovered clinging to the ceiling. Realizing the heroes intended to cleanse the water, the Shaman began summoning a swarm of Fungal Flies to jam the lift's drive-chains and trap the party mid-air.

The lift groans as the Fungal Flies begin to clog the drive-chain, but Cabe and Thistle aren't waiting for the gears to seize. They coordinate a "one-two" punch of physical force and mental will.

The Synergy: Fire and Force

Cabe draws his bow, nocking an arrow wrapped in oil-soaked rags lit by the dying blue flame of the Azure Spark. He spends a Fortune Point to center his breathing amidst the shaking lift.

Cabe’s Attack (Flaming Arrow with Advantage):
Raw d20 Rolls: 18, 5
Selected Roll: 18 (Advantage)
Modifiers:
+5 (Base)
+ 2 (Dex)
+ 1 (Masterwork)
Final Value: 26 (A dead-eye shot!)
Damage: 9 (1d6 + 2  (Dex)
+ 1d4  (Fire)

The Result: The arrow whistles through the rising steam and buries itself in the Shaman’s shoulder. The beastman shrieks as the "Cold Blue" fire ignites the dry, mummified wrappings of its vestments. As the Shaman reels from the impact, Thistle narrows his eyes, focusing his nascent psionic energy into a telekinetic hammer blow.

Thistle’s Psionic Check (DC 12 to Shove)
Raw d20: 14
Modifiers: +2 (Int)
+ 1 (Psionic Resilience)
Final Value: 17

Effect: The invisible force slams into the Shaman just as it loses its grip from the arrow's impact.

The Shaman’s lidless eyes widen. Between the burning arrow and the psychic shove, its cloven hooves slip from the slime-coated ceiling. With a desperate, gargling cry, the creature tumbles backward into the open shaft.

Fall Distance: 40 feet.
Fall Damage: 15 (4d6)

A heavy THUD-SPLASH echoes from below as the Shaman hits the surface of the reservoir. The Reservoir Kraken immediately ripples toward the disturbance, its glowing tentacles dragging the burning beastman into the depths.

The Fungal Flies disperse without their master's will to guide them. The lift gives one final, violent lurch and settles at the top of the shaft. Directly in front of you is a massive, faceted crystal lens embedded in a bronze housing: the Light-Well of the Deep Pump.

Aele (pointing to the center of the lens): "Thistle! The socket! Place the Prism there and speak the Master Word with me!" The black "sludge-moss" on the walls is beginning to quiver, sensing the impending purification.

Thistle steps forward, his hands trembling slightly—not from fear, but from the raw energy vibrating through the Prism of the Deep. As he nears the bronze housing, the rainbow spark inside the octahedron begins to spin with blinding speed, casting wild, spectral colors across the heroes' faces.

Thistle slides the Prism into the central socket of the Light-Well. There is a heavy, metallic thrum that vibrates through the very floor of the cistern.

Aele stands beside him, holding the Heart-Seed Scarab high. Together, their voices join in the ancient Thothian tongue, speaking the Master Word: "The Song of the Looming Sun."

A beam of pure, white light—hotter and more brilliant than the Azure Spark—ignites within the Prism. It hits the faceted lens of the Light-Well and is refracted downward, lancing into the dark waters of the cistern like a pillar of heaven.

The reaction is violent. Where the light touches the black fungal rot on the walls, the moss shrivels and turns to white ash instantly. The dark, brackish water in the reservoir begins to churn and foam, turning crystal clear as the Sovereign's influence is boiled away by the radiant energy.

A psychic scream, far louder than the baboons or the Shaman, echoes through the minds of the party. The Sovereign of the Mushroom Forest has felt his lifeline to the Pump Station severed.

Aele (shouting over the roar of the water): "It's working! The purification is spreading through the pipes! The forest above will drink clean water for the first time in an age!"

As the light stabilizes, the Azure Spark on Aele's torch finally sputters and dies, but it no longer matters—the Light-Well now provides enough illumination to fill the entire chamber.

Thistle's Condition: The strain of channeling the Master Word while maintaining his psionic focus takes its toll.

Thistle's Constitution Check (DC 12 for the ritual):
Raw d20: 7
Modifiers: +1 (Con) + 1 (Psionic Resilience)
Final Value: 9

Result: Failure. Thistle slumps against the pedestal, his nose bleeding slightly. He loses 1 Surge (leaving him with his remaining daily pool).

Dorn catches Thistle. "Easy, lad. You did it. Look at the water... it's like glass."

Wisdom prevails over haste. The Brothers, battered and psychically drained from the ritual, retreat from the roaring brilliance of the Light-Well. They descend the lift and slip back through the hidden hatch into the Hall of Records.

The Clockwork Scarabs have returned to their orderly patterns, ignoring you as you settle into the dry, dust-scented shadows of a side-archive dedicated to the Thothian "Lunar Calendars."

Amidst the towering shelves of bronze cylinders, the party takes an hour to bind wounds and steady their nerves.

Cabe’s Regeneration: Over the course of the rest, Cabe’s supernatural constitution knits his minor scrapes and the bruising from the lift's jolts.

Aele sits cross-legged, the Heart-Seed Scarab resting on his lap. He uses this time to center his spirit, though he remains wary—the "Master Word" has left a lingering hum in his vocal cords.

Thistle wipes the blood from his nose and leans against a stone pillar. He looks pale, but the "clicking" in his mind has quieted to a dull thrum.

As the hour draws to a close, the heavy silence of the Hall of Records is broken. It isn't the clicking of scarabs or the roar of water. It is the sound of heavy, rhythmic breathing coming from the main corridor of the archive.

Dorn freezes, his hand slowly moving to the hilt of Swift. "That's not a beastman," he breathes. "Too big. And it smells like... old cedar and wet earth."

Looking down the row of shelves, you see a flickering torchlight reflecting off a massive, bronze-plated shield. A Thothian Tomb-Guardian—a construct of stone and metal tasked with protecting the records—is patrolling the hall. It hasn't seen you yet, but it is moving toward your alcove.

Aele whispers, "It is a mindless sentinel. It likely sensed the 'theft' of the Lead Cylinder. If it finds us, it won't care that we cleansed the water."

The party manages to put distance between themselves and the Tomb-Guardian.

As the party prepares to leave the Hall of Records, Aele pauses. His eyes drift to a heavy, copper-banded door tucked behind a row of empty cylinder racks. The metal of the door has the same distinct, greenish patina as the Copper Key in the party’s possession.

"Dorn," Aele whispers, "The key we found near the Pump Station... I believe it belongs to this seal. This isn't part of the archives; it's a 'Tithed Chamber.' It's where the priests kept the physical offerings made to the Scribes."

Dorn steps forward, pulling the ancient Copper Key from his belt. He fits it into the lock. The mechanism is stiff from centuries of disuse, requiring a bit of his Strength (18) to turn. With a heavy click-clack, the tumblers fall.

Dorn’s Strength Check (to turn the seized lock):

Raw d20: 16
Modifiers: +4 (Strength)
Final Modified Value: 20

The door swings inward, revealing a small, dust-free vault. Inside, the light from the Heart-Seed Scarab reflects off a small but potent collection of items resting on velvet-lined stone plinths.

  • A Purse of Ancient Coinage: Contains 450 gp in heavy, square-cut Thothian gold coins.
  • The 'Eye of the Scribe' Lens: A magnifying glass made of polished quartz with a gold handle. When used to read any non-magical language, it provides a +5 bonus to Intelligence (History) checks to interpret the text.
  • A Quiver of 'Sun-Slayer' Arrows (x10): These arrows are tipped with white flint. They deal an additional 1d6 Radiant Damage to undead or fungal creatures.
  • A Vellum Scroll: Aele unrolls it and recognizes the celestial notation for 'Thoth's Rejuvenation' (a powerful healing ritual that can restore 3d8+3 HP to a single target).

Dorn (grinning): "Excellent," Dorn says, when Aele identifies the arrows and the scroll and their properties. "Cabe, get those arrows. Aele, the scroll is yours."

With the vault emptied, the Brothers return to the Priest's Path. The climb back up the secret tunnel is arduous, but their spirits are high. As they emerge back into the Deep Pump Station (Level 4), the change is staggering.

The air, once thick with the smell of wet rot and fungal spores, is now crisp and smells of rain. The water rushing through the main pipes is no longer a turgid, black sludge; it is a shimmering, crystal-clear blue that hums with the residual power of the Prism.

Thistle (looking toward the lift to the surface): "The forest above is going to feel this. The Sovereign's grip is failing. But we should move—if the Shaman didn't survive that fall, his master will be sending a legion to see why the water has turned to light."

The Brothers share a grim look as the bronze-shod footsteps of the Tomb-Guardian echo once more through the Hall of Records. Despite Aele’s successful "Clearance" command, the machine represents a lingering threat—and a potential source of ancient materials or secrets. Dorn draws Swift, the blade shimmering with a cold light. "No loose ends," he grunts. "If we're going to use this place as a sanctuary in the future, we can't have a seven-foot bronze ibis patrolling the hallways."

The party positions themselves behind the heavy stone shelves. Cabe nocks a fire arrow (choosing to conserve the Sun-Slayer arrows), while Thistle begins to focus his mental energy on the construct's joints.

Tactical Advantage: Because Aele successfully "deactivated" the Guardian's hostility previously, the party gains a Surprise Round as they strike while it is in "Patrol Mode."

The shadows of the Lunar Calendar racks provide perfect cover. As the Tomb-Guardian clanks past, its silver ibis head scanning the far wall, Dorn signals the attack. The air in the archive suddenly tastes of ozone and woodsmoke.

Surprise Round:

  1. Cabe's Snipe (Fire Arrow):

```Raw d20: 16 Modifiers: +5 (Base) + 2 (Dex) + 1 (Masterwork) Final Value: 24 Damage: 1d6 + 2 { (Dex) + 1d4 (Fire) = 9 damage
The arrow strikes the Guardian's neck joint, the oil-soaked rags flaring bright blue against the bronze. 2. Dorn’s Great Strike (Charge with Swift):
Raw d20: 18 Modifiers: +5 (Base) + 4 (Str) + 2 (Swift's Magic) + 1 (Great Strike) Final Value: 30 Damage: 1d8 + 4 (Str) + 2 Magic + 1 (Great Strike) = 12 damage
Dorn’s blade carves a deep, sparking furrow across the construct's back-plate, exposing whirring copper gears. 3. Thistle’s Psionic Shove (To knock it prone):
Raw d20: 15 Modifiers: +2 (Int) + 1 (Psionic Resilience) Final Value: 18 ```
The invisible hammer-blow of Thistle’s mind slams into the Guardian's chest just as it tries to pivot. The heavy construct loses its center of gravity and crashes to the stone floor with a resounding CLANG.
Even without any rituals' blessing, Dorn’s next strike (in the first non-Surprise round) is surgical. He drives Swift through the construct's central ocular lens. A spray of sparks and a hiss of escaping steam fill the alcove. The Guardian’s limbs twitch once, then go limp.
With the sentinel silenced, the Brothers dismantle the machine for its ancient treasures:
  • The "Eye" Gems: Two Small Sapphires (Value: 100 gp each).
  • Bronze Components: High-grade Thothian bronze scrap (Value: 50 gp).
  • The Shock-Spear: A masterwork spear. Once per day, it can deal an additional 1d6 Lightning Damage
Thistle is given the spear to carry. Dorn and Aele each carry one of the small sapphires. The party leaves the bronze scrap. It's salvage value doesn't support the trouble of transporting its bulk and weight.
The weight of scrap metal is a burden the Brothers don't need while navigating the narrow "Priest's Path." They leave the twisted bronze plating behind in the dust of the archives, focusing on the portable wealth and the humming power of the spear.
Thistle takes the Shock-Spear. Though he is more accustomed to his psionic focuses and priestly tools, the spear’s masterwork balance and the slight tingle of electricity in the grip give him a newfound sense of reach.
Leaving the monolithic shadow of Arden Vul behind, the Brothers of the Deep bypass the temporary camps of the Enclave. Their legs are heavy from the climb, their skin coated in a fine layer of tomb-dust and copper-grease, and their minds are set on the only place that offers true respite: the Inn of the Broken Head.
The walk to the inn is quiet. The distant "Song of the Looming Sun" is now a faint vibration beneath their boots, a secret they carry from the depths. As they approach the tavern, the warm, amber light spilling from the windows and the smell of roasting goat and hops act as a siren's call.
Following the destruction of the Cabal Crawlers in the ventilation plenum, the party began a vertical ascent of approximately fifty feet through a stone maintenance shaft. As they climbed, the utilitarian masonry of the lower levels gave way to the refined, ancient architecture of the Thothian Empire.
Dorn Stelgaard led the climb, Aele Truemas following, navigating by the light of the Map of Resonance which flickered within its Silver Scroll Tube. Cabe and Thistle Down brought up the rear, with Cabe carrying the Broken Resonance Relay salvaged from the plenum.
The party has reached a heavy stone landing where the air is cold and thick with the scent of ozone and ancient parchment.
This marks a pivotal moment in the campaign: the brothers have successfully breached a high-security vault that has likely been sealed for centuries.
While the heroes have navigated the Pump Station and the Ventilation Plenum below, this is their first step onto the polished marble floors of this specific sector.
A Stitched-Flesh Sentinel (Level 5+ construct) is 30 feet ahead, its back to the party. Thousands of stone cylinders—likely containing the recorded history of the Thothian Empire—line the walls in honeycombed racks. A cracked glass tank atop a central pedestal is leaking violet energy, which the Map of Resonance identified as a "Major Instability".
The brothers move with the practiced silence of those who have survived the depths of Arden Vul together. Dorn and Cabe coordinate their timing perfectly to exploit the Stitched-Flesh Sentinel's preoccupation with the sarcophagus.
The Surprise Round
Cabe draws his bow, aiming for the exposed, grey musculature between the Sentinel’s shoulder blades. As the creature heaves against the stone lid, Cabe releases.
Attack Roll: 17
+ 2 (Dexterity)
= 19 (Hit!)
Damage: 6 damage
The arrow thuds deep into the alchemically preserved flesh. Immediately as the arrow strikes, Dorn springs from the shadows of the marble threshold. He covers the 30-foot distance in a blur of plate armor and steel, leading with the glowing blade of Swift.
Attack Roll: 15
+ 1 (Great Strike)
+ 2 (Swift)
+ 2 (Bonus vs. Sentinels)
= 20 (Hit!)
Damage: 1d8
+ 4 (Str)
+ 1 (Great Strike)
+ 4 (Bonus vs. Sentinels)
= 13 damage
Result: Swift shears through the Sentinel's side, severing several thick, stitched tendons. The creature lets out a wet, wheezing sound as its grip on the sarcophagus lid slips. Tactical Note: Because Cabe has now injured the foe, he can use Constrict Their Heart as a free action in the subsequent round.
The construct has taken 19 damage so far. And as the first non-surprise round of combat begins, Cabe uses his Constrict The Heart ability to deal it two more points of damage. Dorn follows through with a heavy horizontal slash from Swift.
Attack Roll: 1d20
+ 9 (+5 Level,
   +1 Great Strike,
   +2 Sword,
   +1 Str)
   = 24 (Hit!)
Damage: 1d8
+ 4 (Str)
+ 1 (Great Strike)
+ 2 (Swift)
= 12 damage
Total Damage on Sentinel: 35 (19 from Surprise + 2 from Constrict + 12 from this strike).
The construct is severely damaged, its grey flesh beginning to slough off in alchemically-treated chunks. However, it finally reacts, swinging a massive, wire-wrapped fist toward Dorn's chest.
Attack Roll: 1d20 + 7 = 18
Result: MISS. The heavy fist slams into Dorn's +2 magical shield with a metallic clang, the impact absorbed effortlessly by his Rank 2 Defensive training and superior gear.
Cabe and Dorn finish off the construct with 2 and 13 points of damage, respectively. With a final, jagged spark of violet energy, the Stitched-Flesh Sentinel collapses. Its massive frame hits the marble floor with a heavy, wet thud, and the sparking from its head-bolts dies down into a faint, acrid wisp of smoke.
The silence that follows is heavy. The only sounds are the rhythmic ticking of the brass mechanism and the slow drip of violet fluid from the cracked tank. The leaking violet fluid is actively dissolving the inscriptions on a cluster of stone cylinders near the pedestal. If left unchecked, that data will be permanently lost. Aele takes 'snapshots' with his eidetic memory.
As a 5th level Thief, Dorn’s hands are steady despite the mounting vibration in the mechanism. He quickly identifies that this isn't a simple "trap" designed to punish an intruder; it is a regulator.
A small escapement wheel has become fouled by a piece of calcified debris (likely from the cracking glass above). This is causing the clockwork to skip beats and accelerate, which in turn is failing to vent the pressure building within the glass tank.
It’s not a black-powder bomb, but a thaumaturgic pressure vessel. If the ticking redlines, the tank will likely explode, showering the immediate area in razor-sharp glass and raw, unstable violet energy.
Dorn pulls a thin, high-tensile needle from his thief’s tools. He needs to jemmy the debris out of the escapement without snapping the delicate brass teeth of the gear.
Action: Thievery (Dexterity) Check
Dorn's Bonus: +5 (Level) + 2 (Dexterity) = +7
The Roll: 14 + 7 = 21
The Result: With the precision of a master locksmith, Dorn slides the needle into the gear train. He feels the resistance of the grit, gives it a sharp flick, and the debris flies out. The skipping stops instantly. The mechanism emits a long, hissing sigh as a relief valve opens, and the ticking returns to a slow, steady, and much quieter rhythm.
The immediate danger of a "thaumaturgic blowout" has been averted.
The party splits their focus with practiced efficiency. While Dorn and Cabe move toward the heavy stone lid of the sarcophagus, Aele and Thistle converge on the pedestal, their eyes fixed on the corrosive violet drip.
The Sarcophagus Investigation (Dorn & Cabe) Dorn stands at the head of the sarcophagus while Cabe takes the foot, his bow still gripped in one hand but slung low. Together, they look through the 30% gap the Sentinel managed to create.
What they see: Inside lies a figure wrapped in exceptionally fine, gold-threaded linen. Unlike the dry, dusty mummies typical of the upper levels, this one looks "supple," as if the preservation process involved the same alchemical fluids used in the tanks.
Resting on the chest of the figure is a hexagonal bronze tablet etched with thousands of microscopic Thothian glyphs. It pulses with a faint, rhythmic amber light that seems to counter the violet "thrum" of the room.
The lid is incredibly heavy. Even with the Sentinel's progress, it will take a coordinated Strength effort to slide it further without damaging the contents.
Aele leans in, his Heart-Seed Scarab glowing in response to the ancient magic in the room, while Thistle tilts his head, perhaps sensing the "mental" frequency of the leaking energy.
Aele’s Analysis: Using his Savant knack, Aele realizes the fluid is "Universal Solvent" infused with liquid memory. It isn't just dissolving the stone cylinders; it is consuming the information stored within them.
Thistle’s Psionic Insight: Thistle feels a "pressure" in his temples. Thistle jaw drops. "The violet eye in the tank isn't an eye at all—it’s a psionic relay. The leak is a "thought-bleed."
Aele says, "Thistle, I'm going to release a small amount of radiant energy. Use your mind, your intuition, to attenuate the energy and use it to slightly melt the tank material around the leak, then to quickly cool. We'll do the same thing a good metalsmith does to repair a tool, only the stakes are much greater here."
"It's ... not working!" Thistle chokes out, sweat beading his forehead.
"Stay calm. Breathe, concentrate," Aele instructs.
Thistle burns a Fortune Point. Finally ... success! The violet drip slows, then stops as the glass fuses shut. A small puff of acrid steam escapes, but the seal holds. The "thought-bleed" is contained.
While the priests are occupied with the "surgery" on the tank, the brothers put their shoulders to the massive stone lid.
Dorn (Str 18): Provides the primary leverage.
Cabe: Braces the side to ensure the lid doesn't slide off and shatter on the floor.
With a final, grating screech of stone-on-stone, the lid slides back.
The figure inside is not a traditional mummy. It is a Thothian High Archivist, preserved in a state of suspended animation rather than death. The golden linen is inscribed with the history of the Hall of Records.
Most importantly, as the lid opens, the hexagonal bronze tablet on the figure's chest begins to glow in sync with Aele's Scarab.
Aele approaches the sarcophagus, the Heart-Seed Scarab pulsing with a warm, amber rhythm that matches the glow of the hexagonal tablet. As he brings the scarab close, the air between the two artifacts begins to shimmer with holographic light.
As Aele concentrates, the Savant and Adept knacks allow him to filter the overwhelming flood of data. But it is very difficult. He burns a Fortune Point... there! The hexagonal tablet isn't just a record; it is a Master Index that links the physical stone cylinders in the racks to a mental map of the Thothian Empire’s greatest secrets.
Ah laughs in wonder, and spontaneously verbalizes: "The thousands of stone tubes are organized by Epoch. The ones the violet fluid almost destroyed belonged to the Third Dynasty of Thoth, the era when the Great Pump Station was first commissioned."
Aele continues, looking down at the gold-linen wrapped figure. "This individual is High Archivist Thutmos. The tablet indicates he is in a 'State of Ma'at'—a suspended animation that can only be ended by a specific ritual or the presentation of a Royal Seal." Aele looks up in awe at his companions. "I am fairly certain my heart scarab qualifies as a royal seal..."
The tablet on the recumbent archivist's chest syncs with Aele’s map. He now sees "flickers" of other instabilities throughout Level 4. One specifically matches the signature of the "Weight of Ma'at" seal that the Brothers of the Deep bypassed earlier.
Thistle is breathing heavily, leaning against the pedestal. He successfully attenuated the energy, but his nascent psionics are taxed.
Dorn and Cabe stand guard over the open sarcophagus, weapons ready. The High Archivist remains motionless, though a faint mist of condensation is forming on the golden linen near his mouth.
The party has secured the room, stopped the catastrophe, and found the Index. However, they are deep in high-security territory.
Aele holds the Heart-Seed Scarab over the bronze tablet, treating it like a lens. As the amber light of the Scarab passes through the hexagonal lattice of the Index, a series of Thothian glyphs are projected onto the honeycomb walls of the chamber.
Through his Savant and Adept knacks, Aele filters through centuries of bureaucracy until three specific hexagonal cells in the western wall begin to glow with a soft, resonant hum.
The Search for the Pump Station Bypasses
Aele directs Dorn toward the glowing racks. These cylinders are crafted from a dense, midnight-blue basalt, distinct from the grey stone of the surrounding records.
As Dorn pulls the third basalt cylinder from its rack, the resonance in the room shifts. The High Archivist Thutmos remains still, but the condensation on his golden shroud is now unmistakable. He is breathing—very slowly—and the amber light on the bronze tablet has turned a steady, pulsing crimson.
Aele steps forward, his voice steady as he calls upon the restorative power of Thoth. "He is transitioning from the Duat back to the waking world. If he wakes in pain or confusion, he may trigger every defense in this hall."
Aele channels a Surge of energy, but instead of the searing white light used for the weld, he softens it into Thoth's Balm.
Restoration Roll: Aele rolls 3d10
sums the two highest results
(Adept/Savant re-rolling 1s and 2s)
Result: 8 + 9 = 17 HP restored to the Archivist
The Scarab’s Gift: Because Aele is using the Heart-Seed Scarab as a focus, Thutmos also gains 1d6 temporary hit points. The amber light from the Scarab washes over the golden linen. The Archivist’s eyes—milky white and ancient—snap open. He gasps, a sound like dry parchment rubbing together, and sits up with surprising fluidity. He stares at Aele, then at the Scarab, and finally at the repaired glass tank.
"The... the thought-bleed has stopped," Thutmos rasps in an archaic dialect of Thothian. "You carry the Seed. You have... preserved the records of the Third Dynasty."
Thutmos ignores the brothers' weapons, his gaze fixed entirely on Aele. He touches the hexagonal tablet on his chest, and the crimson warning light fades back to a peaceful amber.
He looks at the fallen construct. "The Stitched-Ones were failing. They were trying to pry me open not to serve, but to consume my memory-essence. You have saved more than just stone cylinders; you have saved the Index itself."
As a gesture of trust, Thutmos reaches into the folds of his golden shroud and produces a small, heavy disc of translucent obsidian. "This is a Relay Key. It will allow you to command the vertical vents in the Pump Station. Without it, the pressure in those shafts would crush a living man."
The tension in the room has shifted from hostile to reverent. Thutmos begins to slowly unwind his golden wraps, his form appearing thin but infused with a strange, alchemical vitality. "The Pump Station is currently held by those who do not understand the flow of the Great River. If you intend to use the bypasses, you must move now before the 'Eye' in the tank alerts the central hub of my awakening."
Aele answers Thutmose, "We will head to the bypasses immediately, Great One. Is there anything we can do for you before we leave, or some additional task we should perform?"
Thutmos stands fully, the golden linen of his burial shroud trailing like a royal mantle across the marble floor. He looks at the repaired tank, then back to Aele, his milky eyes focusing with a piercing, ancient intelligence.
"The seal you placed on the memory-tank is a temporary bandage, scion of Thoth," the Archivist rasps. "To truly stabilize this sector, the Great Pump must be purged of the corruption that clogs its heart. The 'Beastmen' you see are merely parasites; the true sickness lies in the Alchemical Sludge that has backed up into the primary filtration veins."
Thutmos reaches out a withered hand and touches the Heart-Seed Scarab around Aele's neck. For a moment, a flash of shared history passes between them.
"When you reach the vertical vents using the Obsidian Relay Key, you will find the Primary Governor Valve. It is encrusted with a black, oily fungal growth from the Mushroom Forest above. Use your Azure Spark to burn away that filth. If the valve can turn again, the pressure will flush the lower galleries, and the Hall of Records will be truly safe."
"The 'Eye' in the tank—the psionic relay—is now aware of your presence. It cannot move, but it has sent a pulse to the Sentinel Forge on this level. You have perhaps twenty minutes of 'quiet' before the secondary guardians arrive."
"Go," Thutmos commands, stepping back into the shadows of the honeycomb wall. "I shall remain here to mask your trail within the memory-stream. May the scales of Ma'at find you light."
The room is secure, but you are behind a sealed door. However, Aele notices that the stabilization has revealed a series of recessed handholds leading into a dark aperture at the very top of the basalt silo.
"The resonance is gone," Aele says, tucking the silver tube into his belt. "But we've kicked a hornet's nest. The Cabal will be swarming the Hall of Records. We can't go back the way we came."
It has been a few hours since the battle. During that time the heroes have eaten, drank, even napped some: it's surprising how well people can sleep even in uncomfortable surroundings when they're physically worn out. And our heroers are, while not exhausted, tired. They've had two big melees today.
"What's the nature of the loot?" Cabe asks.
Aele taps the scroll tube, indicating its contents. "This is a Cylindrical Alignment Key, written in High Thothian, that functions as a "Map of Resonance."
"That doesn't clear things up for me," Thistle adds, then returns to knawing on hard-tack.
Aele elucidates, "While held, I can detect the direction of the next unstable Cylinder within Arden Vul. It also contains the ritual 'Seal of the Archivist,' which can be used once to permanently lock a door against any non-divine entry.
"You're shitting me," Dorn says, sitting up.
"I shit you not" Aele returns, equably. "And in this vial is an incredibly rare alchemical substance. If consumed, one can act Hasted for 1 hour, but without the aging side effects. Alternatively, it can be poured onto a broken mechanical or magical object (like a spent wand) to "rewind" its state, restoring 1d6 charges."
All three of his fellows stare blankly at Aele. "Oh," he says, "of course: I should explain that Haste was an example of a form of magic from the Old Archontean Era. A spell. Someone is Hasted when the right magical forces are called into action — such as by consuming the contents of this vial."
Thistle nods, understanding. "Picture Dorn, except doing everything twice as fast during a combat."
Cabe whistles appreciatively and Dorn grins.
"Indeed," says Aele, and he leans over and gives Dorn the vial. "Save it for a special occasion."
"Not a problem," the big fighter replies. "I'm sure we'll have an Oh Shit moment one of these days."
"You mean we haven't had two of those today already?" Thistle says, grinning.
"So I take it there are other Cylinders in Arden Vul that need to be stabilized?"
"I'm not sure," Aele admits. "I wonder if the Sovereign would know?"
Dorn picks up the Violet Glass Jar, holding it toward the sapphire light of the Cylinder. He studies the way the violet mist inside swirls in response to the movement of his hands. As a seasoned warrior and a 5th-level Thief, he has a sharp eye for the practical value of "weird" dungeon salvage.
Dorn grunts, "If we find someone who can crack it open without blowing us to the hells, the glass itself is masterwork. But the energy inside? That’s the real prize. I’d say we don't let it go for less than 175 gp."
Aele consults the Map of Resonance while Dorn and Thistle examine the first few feet of the climb up the vertical shaft. Cabe walks over to look over Aele's shoulder at the map. "What Resonances does the map indicate? Are they sources of magical energy within Arden Vul, or more mundane power sources, or what?"
Aele carefully unfurls the Silver Scroll. As he does, the ink—which previously appeared as static, geometric patterns—begins to ripple and flow across the parchment, reacting to the Heart-Seed Scarab's proximity.
The map does not show physical hallways or tunnels; instead, it displays a series of glowing nodes connected by faint, pulsing ley lines that mirror the internal "nervous system" of the mountain.
Aele points to a cluster of icons as Cabe leans in. "It tracks Harmonic Stability, Cabe. The Thothian Empire didn't just build these as power sources; they were anchors for the reality of the mountain itself." Aele points out to Cabe on the map, "See here, this bright and steady sapphire light? That's the Fourth Cylinder, where we are right now."
Cabe studies the map. "What are these flickering points?" he asks.
"Those," Aele explains, warming to his subject, "are active points of instability. I don't know if they just started malfunctioning because of insufficient maintenance, or if perhaps this cult of the Violet Eye — if we can call it a cult — may be corruping cylinders are purpose."
"And these tiny points that are barely visible?"
"Most likely those are living energies, like the biomechanicals we just fought. Someone is building these and fueling them with corrupted energies from the misaligned cylinders. Or — Thoth forbid — the biomechanicals may have learned how to replicate themselves."
Dorn and Thistle join them for the last of the map discussion. Thistle says, "So, if I understand correctly, the Cylinders power lights, and lifts, and other mechanical things in Arden Vul, but also they anchor the mountain itself, and help prevent some of its more dangerous energies and inhabitants from ... leaking out into the rest of Issenda."
Aele turns to regard his pupil, "Thistle, I do believe your brain is doing one of those things again — pulling up information that is real, even if difficult to parse."
Dorn says, "Looks like it's safe for us to climb up the access chute. Are we ready?"
"Ah, yes of course!" Aele says, rolling up the map and stowing it. He turns to Cabe. "Did you notice? There's a major instability on Level 5 right now. What we might term a Resonance Failure. If the Cabal stabilizes their hold there, they could potentially reverse the flow of energy and turn this very room we're standing in into a vacuum."
With the bronze portal already physically locked, Aele recognizes the need for a more permanent, metaphysical barrier. He moves to the threshold, the Heart-Seed Scarab glowing with a rhythmic, emerald pulse that seems to synchronize with the sapphire light of the stabilized Cylinder.
"Before we leave," Aele says, "let's ensure our labors here have not been in vain." Aele unfurls the Silver Scroll and begins the Litany of Seclusion. His voice, normally steady, takes on a resonant, metallic quality that vibrates through the basalt floor.
Tracing the Boundary: Aele walks the perimeter of the circular bronze door. He does not touch the metal; instead, he traces the frame with the edge of the silver scroll. A trail of fine, glowing silver dust follows the scroll's path, hanging in the air like a frozen spiderweb.
The Invocation: "By the Ibis and the Scale," Aele intones, his eyes fixed on the geometry of the portal. "That which is ordered shall remain silent. That which is recorded shall remain secret. Let the weight of Ma'at sit upon this threshold, unmoving until the stars themselves reset!"
As he finishes the prayer, he slams the silver scroll tube against the center of the door. The silver dust "snaps" inward, sinking into the bronze. The door groans once, and a faint, shimmering field of force—like a heat haze—ripples across the surface.
Thistle's eyes are big as saucers.
"The ritual is complete. The Fourth Cylinder is now a sealed sanctuary," Aele pronounces with satisfaction. The door is now magically barred. It cannot be picked, forced, or bypassed by anything short of a high-level Dispel Magic or the specific Master Key of the Archivist.
"Oh, I understand," Thistle says. "The Cabal’s violet energy can no longer 'leakl into this room. The Cylinder is safe from further tampering for the foreseeable future."
"Just so," Aele agrees.
"Nice work, everyone. Let's climb!" says Dorn.
With the room sealed behind them by the Seal of the Archivist, the party begins the climb.
Dorn leads the way. His 18 Strength makes the vertical climb look effortless. He moves with a predator's grace, his eyes scanning the bronze rungs for any sign of Thothian "security" measures or structural fatigue.
Thistle follows. Strengthened by his recent advancement and his new 13 Constitution, he keeps pace better than he ever has before, his breathing steady despite the verticality.
Cabe and Aele bring up the rear. Aele hitches his robes, the Heart-Seed Scarab glowing faintly against his chest, illuminating the rungs for those below.
The shaft is perfectly circular, carved with a precision that defies the age of the ruin. As the heroes climb, the "parchment and ozone" scent grows stronger. After approximately sixty feet of vertical climbing, the air pressure shifts and they feel a steady, cool draft pulling upward.
Dorn reaches a point where the rungs end. He hauls himself up onto a wide, flat ledge. He reaches down a gloved hand to pull Thistle, then the others, onto the platform.
The heroes find themselves in a massive, horizontal rectangular corridor made of dull gray stone. Huge, unmoving bronze fan blades, each ten feet long, are set into the walls at intervals.
To the east, the corridor continues into darkness, the floor covered in a thick layer of grey dust, while to the west can be seen a faint, flickering violet light reflecting off the walls—the unmistakable sign of Cabal activity or a rogue energy source. Directly ahead, a heavy iron grate has been rusted through, leading into what looks like a series of smaller crawlspaces.
"We're behind the walls now," Cabe whispers, checking his bowstring. "In the spaces the Archivists didn't want the public to see."
Cabe sees Dorn wince and realizes that the big fighter is still considerably wounded. Cabe initiates what we'll term a 'Cabe Health Adjustment'. As Cabe’s blood-bond pulses with a deep crimson light, Dorn’s bruises fade while Cabe winces, a pale exhaustion crossing his face. Because Cabe is currently at full health, his Regeneration will begin ticking at the start of the next combat round to refill that deficit. Dorn has regained 5 hit points.
"Give me a minute and I'll hit it another lick," Cabe tells Dorn.
"Good, do so, because according to the Map of Resonance," Aele announces, "there are Cabal forces to the west of our position."
As Cabe initiates the Cabe Health Adjustment, he reaches out and grips Dorn’s shoulder. A visible ripple of crimson energy transfers from the specialist to the fighter. Dorn’s posture straightens as the last of his deep fatigue vanishes, while Cabe staggers, his skin paling as the tax on his life force takes hold.Cabe has adjusted another 10 hit points, healing Dorn and bracing himself, hands on knees as he takes the hit and his body begins to regenerate the damage.
There is a 1-in-6 chance a Cabal Crawler discovers the heroes while Cabe is regenerating. The dice favor the Brothers! The 14 rounds pass in a tense, dusty silence. The only sound is the rhythmic thrum-thrum of the Resonance Relay and the faint, wet sound of Cabe’s biology accelerating its repair.
With the party mostly mended and the ventilation plenum quiet, Dorn and Cabe slide through the shadows of the massive bronze fan blades, closing the distance to the Resonance Relay.
Dorn moves with the fleet grace of a veteran, while Cabe’s footsteps are silent, his focus entirely on the clicking brass legs of the constructs.
Because the Cabal Crawlers are sated and distracted by the violet energy, the heroes gain a Surprise Round. Aele and Thistle hang back near the rust-eaten iron grate, ready to provide support if the front line falters.
Dorn lunges from the dark, Swift trailing a line of blue-white light. He uses his Great Strike (+1 to-hit and damage) to aim for the central joint where the Crawler’s brass thorax meets its legs.
Attack Roll: 17
+ 1 (Great Strike)
+ 2 (Surprise)
The blade shears through two brass legs, sending a spray of violet sparks across the floor. The Crawler screeches—a sound like metal on a whetstone. Combined with Cabe's 8 damage, the first Crawler didn't just collapse—it was practically cleaved in half before its gears could even register the threat.
The remaining Crawler lunges at the man who just destroyed its twin, but its claws skitter harmless across Dorn's shield. Its violet eye flashes with frustration. Above, the Resonance Relay is reaching a fever pitch. The "red alert" light is no longer flickering—it’s a steady, blinding crimson glow, and a low-frequency hum is making the heroes' teeth ache.
"It's about to bridge!" Aele shouts, his hand tightening on the Heart-Seed Scarab. "If that pulse hits the next relay, the whole sector will wake up!"
Dorn deals another 13 damage to the remaining Crawler, putting it out of commission. When he turns around, he sees that Cabe and Thistle have the Resonance Relay, which Aele studies with them. The relay appears to be dying, losing power.
The Path Forward The dust in the plenum begins to settle. The immediate silence is heavy. Aele motions for the group to gather closer to the rust-eaten iron grate leading toward the smaller crawlspaces.
"We cannot stay here," Aele whispers. "The destruction of a Relay is like a missing tooth in the mountain's mouth. The Overseers will feel the gap in the resonance soon enough."
Dorn wipes a smear of violet oil from his blade. "Which way, Aele? We follow the dust East, or do we squeeze through these grates and try to find a way to Level 5?"
Cabe wears the Silver Medallion and Thistle keeps the Wand of Dark Yew visible at his hip. If they are spotted in the shafts by lesser cultists, they look like a specialized retrieval team.
Thistle grips the dark yew wand. The psionic static in his head seems to sharpen into a singular point. "The air up there... it's dry. And it tastes like copper. She's waiting, but she's looking at the doors, not the ceiling."
Before taking leave of the halflings, Aele addresses them. "Remember this day, that the Brothers of the Deep gave you forewarning and timely aid. Now we leave you, to confront a great menace so that its evil machinations cannot bring woe to the Fungal Forest, to you. Is there any information or other aid that you can provide to help us in our quest?"
Aele’s voice carries a gravity that silences the rustling of the nearby fungal stalks. Keeva looks at her scouts, then back at the "Brothers." The sight of the glowing Scarab and the prompt disposal of the Golem has clearly shifted her perspective from "mercenary contract" to "pivotal alliance."
She signals for her scouts to stand down and steps toward Aele, her expression uncharacteristically somber.
"You’ve got a way with words, Priest," Keeva says, her voice low. "And you’ve got a way with steel. The Small Ones don't forget when someone helps us keep our floor. You want aid? I can give you the 'Scout’s Truth' of the Hall of Records."
She pulls a small, dried mushroom cap from her pouch—a Whisper-Cap—and crushes it. A faint, silver dust hangs in the air, sharpening everyone's hearing for a moment.
"The one you're looking for... the Mother of Scorpions. We’ve seen her 'children' skittering through the vents. Those scorpions aren't just pets; they're her eyes and ears. But they hate the Cold Smoke. If you find any ancient Thothian 'Fire-Sticks' (alchemical torches), the blue flame sends the scorpions into a frenzy of fear. They'll scatter and leave her unprotected."
"There’s a pressure plate at the base of the Great Archive stairs in the Hall. It’s a 'Weight of Ma'at' trap. If you step on it, the doors lock and the room fills with sand. But if you hug the Left-Hand Wall and walk only on the black marble veins, the mechanism won't trigger. The Thothians used the black stone as a 'safety path' for their librarians."
Keeva reaches into a hidden pocket in her leather vest and pulls out two small, clay jars.
Soot-Paste: "Smear this under your eyes and on your blades. It kills the reflection of the bioluminescence. It’ll give you a better chance of getting into the rafters without the Priestess's scorpions catching the glint of your steel."
"Go on then," Keeva grunts, nodding toward the hidden ventilation shaft. "We’ll keep a 'Watch-Fire' burning here. If things go south and you need to run, come back to the forest. We’ll make sure anyone following you finds a very short, very sharp end to their journey."
Dorn takes the Soot-Paste and begins applying it to Swift and his own face. Cabe secures the Silver Medallion, and Thistle tucks the Wand of Dark Yew into his belt, feeling the weight of the Halflings' respect.
The "Black Vein" Secret Allows the party to move safely through the Hall of Records if they drop to the floor
"Thank you, Keeva," Dorn says, handing the halfling five golden coins. Perhaps you can find a use for these coins. You have aided us. The Brothers of the Deep remember their friends."
Keeva catches the five gold coins out of the air with the practiced reflex of a card-sharp. She flips one over her knuckles, the ancient Thothian gold catching the dim fungal light, before tucking them into a secure pocket.
"Gold is a language everyone in Arden Vul speaks, Dorn," she says with a sharp, respectful nod. "But out here, it's the sentiment that buys the loyalty. We’ll keep the 'back door' open for you. Don't be strangers—provided you're still walking upright when you come back."
With the halflings watching their back, the Brothers of the Deep vanish into the vertical shaft after Keeva flips a hidden mechanism that causes a section of stone wall sporting fungal shelf growths to open.
The heroes apply the paste. Cabe adjusts the silver medallion, its seven-lashed eye catching the last of the bioluminescence. "Let's move. I want to see if this 'Mother' bleeds like her sons did."
The climb begins.
After a grueling climb, you reach the primary junction. Aele slides a heavy brass grate aside just an inch. You are roughly thirty feet above the floor of the Hall of Records, perched on a maintenance catwalk that runs the perimeter of the ceiling.
Below you, the majesty of the Thothian Empire is on full display—and the corruption of the Cabal is equally evident.
After a grueling climb, you reach the primary junction. Aele slides a heavy brass grate aside just an inch. You are roughly thirty feet above the floor of the Hall of Records, perched on a maintenance catwalk that runs the perimeter of the ceiling.
Below you, the majesty of the Thothian Empire is on full display—and the corruption of the Cabal is equally evident. The Mother of Scorpions sits cross-legged on the dais where the Seal of Ma'at once stood. Her iridescent robes ripple like oil on water. Four large bronze braziers surround her, pouring out a thick, greenish-purple smoke that smells of rotting lilies and copper.
The "carpet" of scorpions isn't just on the floor; they are slowly spiraling up the four central pillars, their tails twitching in unison with her breathing.
Just as Keeva promised, the floor is a mosaic of white marble, but a singular, jagged line of Black Marble winds from the entrance to the Hall of Cylinders door.
Dorn signals for Aele to close the brass plate. Once that's done, Dorn says quietly, "We're not prepared for this. We need anti-venom and fire. Where can we go to get those things?"
Aele considers the unique flora of the Fungal Forest. While he doesn't have a pre-made "kit," his background as a Cleric of Thoth and his familiarity with the Sovereign’s domain give him a distinct advantage. He says, "I can synthesize a potent antitoxin if we return to the Fungal Forest so I can gather some components."
Cabe weighs in, "Let's do that."
Thistle says, "Maybe the halflings can give us an idea where we can acquire an item or chemicals to produce blue flame. We might get lucky if we rushed the Mother right now, but I'd feel better if we tilted the circumstances in our favor..."
Aele and Dorn share a look, pleased that Thistle is beginning to feel like 'one of the guys'.
Dorn nods, "Okay, let's head back. We've been victorious in combat because we stack the deck. Let's not break our winning streak now because of impatience." The party returns to the Fungal Forest and seeks out Keeva again. As they approach, Aele says, "I have been praying and I believe Thoth has already equipped his servant with the ability to produce the blue flame we need. Now, if we can manage to come up with antitoxin..."
Back at the forest perimeter, the halfling sentries emerge from the bioluminescence with their slings lowered. Keeva crosses her arms, watching you approach with a mix of curiosity and professional caution. "Back so soon? Forget your courage in the vents, or did you realize those scorpions have more stings than you have skin?"
When Aele explains the need for antitoxin and his plan to brew it, Keeva whistles, and one of her scouts produces a small bundle of Milk-Stalk and Bitter-Shelf fungi. "We have the raw materials, Priest, but brewing takes time—and time in Arden Vul usually costs blood. If you're going to sit here for ten minutes, my lads will keep the perimeter, but keep your voices down. The forest has ears."
Keeva produces the needed ingredients:
  • Milk-Stalk Spores: Known to bind with organic toxins in the bloodstream.
  • Bitter-Shelf Resin: A natural stimulant that prevents the heart from slowing under the effect of paralysis-inducing venom.
  • Aele's Own Ritual Water: To serve as a purified base for the concoction.
Aele sets up a small traveling mortar and pestle. He works with rhythmic, prayerful movements, grinding the spores and resin into a thick, translucent paste before diluting it with ritual water.
Time Elapsed: 10 minutes.
Yield: 3 Doses of Thothian Antitoxin.
Effect: Each dose grants Advantage on Saving Throws vs. Poison for 1 hour. If consumed after being stung, it allows an immediate re-roll of the save with a +2 bonus.
"Right then," Dorn says, distributing the vials of bitter, milky liquid to Cabe and himself. "We have the protection, we have the blue light, and we have the path. Let's go finish this."
Keeva gives a curt nod. "Good hunting. If you kill the Mother, tell her the Small Ones sent their regards."
Cabe is quick with a rejoinder: "We shall, and perhaps we'll bring you a bauble or two..."
The Brothers and Thistle climb the conduit once more, moving with silent purpose. You reach the grate overlooking the Hall of Records. The scene below is unchanged: the Mother of Scorpions sits in her trance, the green-purple smoke curling around her, and the carpet of scorpions twitching on the marble floor.
Aele expends 1 Surge (4/5 remaining). He tosses a soot-blackened stone, now radiating a Cold Blue intensity, into the densest cluster of scorpions near the dais. The sea of scorpions recoils in a violent, chittering wave, creating a 10-foot radius of clear marble around the Priestess. The "Mother" snaps her eyes open, but the sudden blue glare dazes her.
Result: Dorn lands like a thunderclap. Swift carves a deep, glowing line through her iridescent robes and into her chest. She is blown backward off her stone seat.
From the shadows of the ceiling, three darts of pure force erupt from the Wand of Dark Yew.
Damage: 3d4+3 = 10 Force Damage (Auto-hit)
Result: The missiles slam into her as she tries to roll away from Dorn, pinning her against the base of the dais.
Altogether, the party has delivered 38 points of damage to the Mother of Scorpions during the Surprise Round — with Dorn delivering the Lion's Share of that damage.
The Mother of Scorpions is gasping, her iridescent robes shredded and soaked in black ichor. However, she is a high-level threat in the world of Issenda; despite the staggering 38 damage, she is still clinging to life and has begun her counter-chant.
Dorn is standing directly over her, Swift humming with the residue of the critical hit.
Aele is readying his next move, the Blue Flame still keeping the carpet of scorpions at bay around the dais.
Thistle is preparing the final charge of the wand, even as scorpions begin to crest the rafters near his position.
The Mother of Scorpions attempts to maintain her chant through the pain of the surprise round.
Despite the black ichor staining the marble, she grits her teeth and completes the guttural invocation. The room begins to rumble. The adrenaline of the drop and the urgency of the crumbling ceiling dictate the speed of the combatants.
Combatant Initiative (1d20+Dex) Action Order
Thistle 12 + 2 = 14 3rd
Mother of Scorpions 11 + 2 = 13 4th
Aele 8 + 0 = 8 5th
Cabe strikes the Mother with an arrow for four more damage; Dorn rips into her for another 13 damage; Thistle does another 10 damage with the yew wand, which is now spent.
With her final breath, the Mother of Scorpions slams her hands onto the marble. The rumble reaches a crescendo. A Giant Scorpion of translucent, spectral energy erupts from the floor beneath the dais, hurling Dorn back 10 feet.
Status: She is still standing, but barely. She has now taken a total of 65 Damage.
Aele steps to the edge of the blue light and raises the Heart-Seed Scarab. He expends a Surge, and the Mother is struck by a ball of radiant energy for 10 more damage! The radiant beam pierces through the spectral scorpion and strikes the Mother in the heart. Her iridescent robes ignite in white fire. She collapses, her body dissolving into a pile of ash and dry chitin.
Total Damage Dealt: 38 (Surprise) + 37 (Round 1) = 75 Damage.
Confused, the scorpions on the walls are beginning to drop and scatter now that their "Mother" is gone. The rumbling has stopped, but several large cracks have formed in the marble above. "The door, Dorn!" Aele points to the circular bronze portal of the Hall of Cylinders. "The resonance is peaking—we have to use the Chisel before her 'Children' recover their wits! Get down here, Thistle, and walk on the black tiles only!" The heroes rush for the circular bronze portal, staying on the black tiles.
The Mother of Scorpions is a heap of smoldering ash, and the spectral guardian has vanished with her final breath. The remaining scorpions, robbed of her guiding will and terrified by the Azure Spark, scatter into the dark crevices of the masonry.
Thistle scrambles down from the rafters with surprising agility, his face pale but determined. He lands near the entrance and immediately finds the jagged vein of Black Marble. Following the "Scout's Truth" provided by Keeva, the party moves in a tight line, their boots clicking only on the dark stone to avoid the weight-sensitive sand traps of the Great Archive.
The heroes safely reach the massive bronze portal. It is ten feet in diameter, etched with celestial maps and the lineage of the Thothian scholar-kings. Unlike the door Dorn picked earlier, this one has no keyhole. Instead, there is a circular indentation in the center—the exact size of the Heart-Seed Scarab.
Aele steps forward, his hand trembling slightly from the adrenaline. He presses the Scarab into the slot. The bronze gears within the door groan, sounding like a mountain moving, and the seal rotates open.
The room beyond is a perfect silo of polished basalt. In the center stands a singular, massive brass cylinder—the Fourth Cylinder. It is covered in thousands of tiny, shifting cogs that represent the calculated movements of the stars.
The Resonance here is deafening to Thistle; it’s a high-pitched vibration that makes the soot-paste on your skin itch.
The Cylinder is currently "locked" in a high-vibration state. Steam vents from its base, and the internal gears are grinding with a heat that suggests imminent mechanical failure. It's going to explode soon!
Aele, with an effort of will, brings an initial wave of panic under control. "Dorn, the Resonance Chisel, quick! Use it at the base of the Cylinder to bleed off the excess energy and stabilize the device!"
Dorn moves with the fluid precision of a master thief, ignoring the vibrating basalt floor and the deafening hum of the Fourth Cylinder. He draws the Resonance Chisel, its cold Thothian metal contrasting with the heat radiating from the brass gears.
Dorn finds the harmonic hub—a series of crystal-aligned ports at the base of the cylinder—and begins to carefully apply the chisel to bleed off the building pressure.
Dorn's Check: Dexterity (Thieves' Tools)
As the chisel makes contact, a high-pitched whine erupts, followed by a violent spray of blue sparks. The frantic grinding of the internal gears slows to a rhythmic, steady thrum. The heat dissipates instantly, replaced by a cool, stabilizing vibration that resonates through the Heart-Seed Scarab.
The Fourth Cylinder is stabilized!
While Dorn works, Cabe and Thistle take up positions by the circular bronze door. The heavy clank of metal boots grows louder. From the shadows of the marbled hallway, the first of the Cabal's reinforcements appear: Two Stitched-Flesh Sentinels, their bodies grafted with bronze plating and powered by glowing violet jars on their backs.
"They're here!" Thistle shouts, his voice cracking. He looks at the inert Wand of Dark Yew, then pulls his dagger. "Aele, I'm out of magic!"
"Hold them at the threshold!" Aele commands, his staff pulsing with the last of his radiant energy. "Dorn, the stabilization is holding, but the Cylinder needs one minute to fully reset its celestial alignment. We have to hold this room for one full minute! Thistle, forget the wand, you are a priest of Thoth: use your surge powers!"
Dorn plants himself at the circular portal, a bulwark of defense, a bastion to deny the reinforcements entry into the chamber. He yells, "Cabe and Thistle, make ranged attacks from behind me!"
The chamber of the Fourth Cylinder hums with a newfound stability, but the air is thick with the scent of ozone and the heavy, rhythmic thud of bronze-plated feet. Dorn stands like a monolith in the center of the bronze portal, Swift glowing with a cold, blue light that matches the Azure Spark still flickering on the floor.
"One minute!" Dorn roars, his voice echoing off the basalt walls. "Not a single stitch of meat crosses this line!"
Dorn anchors himself at the center of the threshold, his boots braced against the ancient bronze frame. Behind him, Cabe’s eyes take on a frightening, bloodshot hue as he triggers his Red Frenzy.
The Stand: Round 3 (40 Seconds Remaining)
The air in the hallway grows thick with the hissed steam from the Sentinels' power jars.
Cabe bites his lip until it bleeds, the sacrificial pain fueling his focus. He draws his bow to the breaking point. The arrow slams into the lead Sentinel’s throat-joint, sparking against the brass reinforcement.
Damage: 2d6 + 4 = 9 Damage.
Blood-Bond Distribution: The damage is split between the three bonded heroes.
  • Dorn: -3 HP (Current: 41/60)
  • Cabe: -3 HP (Current: 34/49)
  • Aele: -3 HP (Current: 47/52)
Battle Status: 20 Seconds Remaining (8 Rounds)
The first Sentinel is down! However, the second Sentinel is now fully engaged with Dorn, and Cabe has been reduced to below 35 hit points, which may trigger a change in Aele's strategy.
"Dorn, stay steady! The light is turning gold—the alignment is nearly there!" Aele sees Cabe clutching his side. "Thistle, look to Cabe!" Aele triggers Thoth's Comfort.
The golden light within the Hall of Cylinders intensifies to a blinding white glare. As the gears of the Fourth Cylinder lock into their final celestial alignment, the room hums with a frequency that vibrates in everyone's very marrow.
Round 6: The Final Ten Seconds
The Cabal Overseer steps into the light of the doorway, eyes burning with violet malice.
Aele slams the butt of his staff onto the basalt floor, triggering the prepared effects of Thoth's A shimmering blue aura wraps around Dorn, Cabe, and Thistle. Everyone gains +1 to Armor Class and Saving Throws for the next 30 rounds. Additionally, everyone receives an instantaneous +1 HP.
Current HP: Dorn: 42/60 | Cabe: 42/49 | Aele: 48/52 | Thistle: 18/17 (Over-max).
Thistle heals Cabe for +3 HP, Cabe's arrow thunks into the overseer for 6 damage, and Dorn meets the Overseer at the threshold. The Overseer raises a hand to cast a spell, but Dorn is faster, using the reach of Swift to interrupt the somatic gestures.
Attack Roll: 17
Damage: 1d8 (8)
+ 2 (Swift)
The Overseer is nearly cleaved in two. It staggers back, its violet lightning fizzling out as it chokes on its own ichor.
The Alignment Complete
A deep, sonorous gong echoes throughout the complex—not from a physical bell, but from the Fourth Cylinder itself. The violet haze in the hallway dissipates instantly as the stabilizing energy of the cylinder reasserts control over the local ley lines.
The remaining Sentinel and the dying Overseer are thrown back by a shockwave of pure Order. The bronze portal of the Hall of Cylinders slams shut and seals itself with a final, definitive click.
The Aftermath
The heroes are alone in the basalt chamber. The Fourth Cylinder is now silent, glowing with a soft, steady sapphire light.
  • Dorn: 42/60 HP.
  • Cabe: 48/49 HP.
  • Aele: 48/52 HP (4/5 Surges).
  • Thistle: 17/17 HP (1/2 Surges).
"We did it," Thistle whispers, leaning against the cold stone wall. "The resonance is gone. The forest is safe."
Aele walks to the center of the room. Where the Heart-Seed Scarab was slotted into the door, a small compartment has opened, revealing a crystal vial filled with a swirling, translucent vapor and a silver scroll tube embossed with the mark of Thoth.
The chaos of the corridor is replaced by a heavy, hallowed silence. With the bronze portal sealed, the air inside the chamber feels purified, as if the stabilization of the Fourth Cylinder has scrubbed the psychic grime of the Cabal from the room.
Dorn wipes the ichor from Swift, and Cabe leans against the basalt wall, his breathing finally slowing as his supernatural regeneration and Thistle's prayer close his wounds.
Short Rest Recovery
As the BofD take ten minutes to catch their breath and survey the chamber:
All PCs: Regain 1 HP from the rest.
Cabe: His Regeneration continues to tick. Over ten minutes, he recovers fully to his maximum.
Current Party HP:
  • Dorn: 43/60
  • Cabe: 49/49
  • Aele: 49/52
  • Thistle: 17/17
The defeat of a high-level Priestess and her Stitched-Flesh Sentinels, combined with the stabilization of a Major Thothian Artifact, yields significant experience.
Encounter Component XP Value
The Mother of Scorpions 1,850 XP
2x Stitched-Flesh Sentinels 1,300 XP (650 each)
Cabal Overseer (Driven off/Defeated) 900 XP
Story Goal: Stabilizing the 4th Cylinder 2,500 XP
Total Party XP 6,550 XP
Individual Totals:
  • Aele, Dorn, & Cabe: Each gain 2,183 XP
  • Thistle: Gains 1,091 XP
Thistle Levels Up to Level 3, gaining +8 HP. His new Max HP is 25 (28 after he increases his Constitution to 13). He gains +1 BAB. Daily Surges increase from 2 to 3. His base saving throws have improved by one point across the board.
Thistle sits on the basalt floor, his back against the cooling metal of the Fourth Cylinder. As he breathes in the purified air of the chamber, he feels a strange, resonant growth within his spirit—a strengthening of the psionic and divine tether he shares with Thoth.
Thistle stands up, dusting off his robes. He looks significantly more sturdy than he did when you first entered the Hall of Records. He grips his dagger and looks up at the aperture in the ceiling.
"I feel... broader," he whispers, testing the weight of his new vitality. "The 'static' in my head has quieted. I'm ready to move when you are, Dorn."
As the bioluminescent spores drift like slow-moving fireflies between the massive mushroom stalks, the lead halfling sentry, a grizzled veteran named Keeva, keeps her sling whirring in a low, menacing circle. Behind her, three other "Small Ones" remain half-merged with the shadows of the giant fungi.
"Give me one reason why I shouldn't think you're just leading trouble to our door to save your own shins," Keeva rasps.
Dorn steps forward, palms open, leaning into his veteran-mercenary gravel. "Look at the state of us. We just came from the Broken Head. We could have slipped out the back and let those hooded crows hunt us through the upper halls. Instead, we came here. Why? Because every two weeks some new 'high priest' or 'overlord' thinks they can squeeze the Mushroom Forest. You’ve heard the rumors same as me—the Cabal of the Eye wants a monopoly on the deep trade."
Aele steps up beside him. As he does, the Heart-Seed Scarab on his chest begins to pulse with a deep, resonant amber light. It seems to draw energy from the forest itself, its glow harmonizing with the bioluminescence of the towering mushrooms.
"The Sovereign of this forest gave me this mark," Aele says, his voice amplified by a subtle, divine resonance. "It pulses now because it senses a violation of the forest’s peace. Those who follow us do not seek trade; they seek the Cylinders, and they will pave a road through your village with your own stalks to get there. We are here to ensure the balance remains."
Keeva watches the Scarab. The halflings have a deep, superstitious reverence for the Sovereign of the Forest, and seeing the artifact wax in power here is more convincing than a mountain of gold.
She stops the whirring of her sling. "The stone-bug doesn't lie, even if men do. And you're right—we've heard whispers of a 'Purple Purge' coming from the upper levels." She turns and sharp-whistles into the dark. "Lads! Prime the Spore-Pods! We’ve got 'Inquisitors' to bury!"
The halflings move with terrifying efficiency. Within minutes:
  • The Trip-Wires are set at the narrowest point of the trail.
  • The Stalk-Blind is reinforced with extra bundles of fungal wood for cover.
  • Thistle is handed a small clay pot.
"Spore-grenade," Keeva grunts. "Throw it at the feet of anything that looks too tall."
As an approaching violet light washes over the fungal stalks, two hooded figures step into the clearing, their movements synchronized and predatory. The heretics always travel in pairs, echoing the dual nature of the Eyes they serve. A Caged Eye Golem looms between them, its brass housing hissing as alchemical steam vents from its joints.
The first hooded figure grips a wand of dark yew. He is the one who spoke of a high priestess, back at the Inn of the Broken Head. His eyes scan the heights for the source of the "resonance." The other holds a curved sacrificial dagger in one hand and a handful of silver dust in the other—likely the components for a Shield or Mirror Image spell.
Between them is a large golem of some sort, comprised of flesh and brass. Its violet light pulses. It is the heavy hitter, acting as a mobile shield for the two casters.
Dorn gives the signal. The Halflings don't hesitate.
  • The Spore-Burst: Keeva pulls a hidden cord. Three Spore-Pods buried in the mulch explode simultaneously. A thick, opaque cloud of orange dust envelops the trio.
  • Aele’s Blessing: Aele touches Dorn’s shoulder, chanting a swift prayer to the Lord of Knowledge. Thoth’s Champion [2026-02-18] is triggered. Dorn is suddenly suffused with a golden light, gaining +2 to attack bonus and saving throws for the next 5 rounds.
  • The Blood-Bond: Cabe closes his eyes for a split second, tightening the Blood-Bond. He is ready to distribute any damage the Golem manages to land on Dorn or Aele.
  • Thistle sees the violet light flickering. "The one on the right! He's the one maintaining the Golem's connection! If we break his concentration, the big one might go wild!"
With the Halfling's dust cloud providing total concealment, Dorn leaps from the Stalk-Blind. He isn't aiming for the Golem—he's aiming for Heretic Beta.
The Attack: Dorn rolls a 16
He catches Heretic Beta completely by surprise. Dorn’s magical blade, Swift, whistles through the orange haze and bites deep into the heretic’s shoulder, nearly severing the arm. The silver dust falls from the man's hand, unused.
Aele keeps himself out of direct melee for the moment, waiting to see if an ally is injured. If that happens, Aele will use the scarab to confer 1d6 temporary hit points on one ally. Cabe will fire a fiery arrow at the injured heretic, gaining a bonus because the heretic is prone. Thistle throws a spore grenade at the uninjured heretic, cafefully ensuring that Dorn will be outside the area of effect.
Aele remains on the Stalk-Blind, his fingers white-knuckled around the Heart-Seed Scarab. He watches Dorn through the orange haze, ready to channel the amber light of Thoth the moment a hero's blood is spilled. The Scarab hums in sympathy with the forest, its translucent agate surface glowing with an internal fire.
From his elevated position, Cabe draws a heavy arrow, the tip dipped in alchemical pitch and ignited. He ignores the flailing Golem and focuses on Heretic Beta, who is clutching his shoulder on the ground.
Thistle lobs a spore grenade and a moment later the uninjured heretic is coughing and retching. The orange spore cloud begins to thin, revealing the chaos within. Heretic Beta is a crumpled, smoking heap on the forest floor. Heretic Alpha is stumbling, his limbs heavy from Thistle’s numbing spores. The Caged Eye Golem is the only true threat remaining, its brass cage rattling as it prepares to regain its sight.
Keeva and her three scouts let fly with their slings, aiming for the Golem's central brass housing.
Attack Rolls: 14, 19, 8, 21 (Natural 20).
Effect: Three stones clatter harmlessly off the stitched hide, but the natural 20 finds a gap in the brass grate. The violet light flickers violently. The Golem's AAC is reduced by 2 for the remainder of this round as its internal stabilizing "Eye" is rattled.
Dorn leans into the momentum of Thoth’s Champion, his magical blade Swift humming with a high-pitched resonance. He targets the weakened brass cage.
Heretic Alpha is unconscious and dying. The heretic collapses, clutching his neck, incapacitated and out of the fight.
With the heretics incapacitated—one burning from Cabe's arrow and the other bleeding out from his athame—the Caged Eye Golem is alone. It flails, its violet light flickering as it tries to re-stabilize its internal "soul."
Keeva and her scouts see the Golem's brass cage is buckled from Dorn's first strike. They let fly with heavy lead bullets.
Attack Rolls: 18, 14, 21 (Crit), 16.
Modified Results vs AAC 16: Three hits.
The critical hit from the lead slug shatters the glass housing of the Violet Eye. Alchemical "blood" sprays the fungal stalks. (9 Damage total).
Dorn capitalizes on the Golem's staggering frame. With Thoth’s Champion still coursing through him, he delivers a horizontal cleave aimed at the Golem's neck-seam.
Swift shears through the stitched muscle and the brass neck-brace. The Golem’s head—cage and all—is severed. It hits the mulch with a heavy thud, and the massive body follows, collapsing into a heap of dead meat and machinery.
Keeva approaches the massive, severed head. She looks at the brass cage, then back at Dorn. "Nasty bit of work," she says, gesturing to the Golem. Keeva kicks a loose patch of moss over a bloodstain. "Professional work," she grunts, signaling her scouts to stay in the shadows. "Most 'heroes' who come through here are too busy screaming to set a proper ambush. You lot have stones. If you're heading deeper into the marbled halls, watch the floor—the Cabal likes their pressure plates."
She doesn't ask what the heretics wanted. In the Mushroom Forest, asking questions usually leads to being tasked with the answers.
The golden aura around Dorn is flickering like a dying candle. He has 3 rounds of Thoth’s Champion left.
Dorn kneels by the unconscious Heretic Alpha. He doesn't look like a holy warrior; he looks like a man who has run out of patience. He grabs the heretic by the cowl and hauls him upright, the edge of Swift resting cold against the man’s throat.
"The High Priestess," Dorn growls, his voice amplified by the fading ritual. "Where is she? And why is she sending trash like you into the forest?"
The heretic’s eyes snap open. He sees the glowing warrior and the pile of stitched meat that used to be his Golem. He chokes out a bloody laugh. "The... the Mother of Scorpions... she is already at the Hall of Records. She doesn't need to 'send' us. We were just the gleaners. If you have what she seeks... she will smell it on you when you cross the threshold."
He coughs, his eyes darting to Aele. "The Scarab... it's a beacon, priest. You might as well be carrying a sun into a den of vipers." Aele hangs his head. Of course, the Scarab! And we thought they were tracking the Resonance Chisel...
The heretic has given a location: The Hall of Records, where the heroes only recently lifted the Seal of Ma'at. If the "Mother of Scorpions" is there, she is sitting right on the gateway to the Cylinders.
The golden light around Dorn's silhouette begins to flicker and fade as the final seconds of Thoth’s Champion tick away. Sensing the urgency, Aele steps forward, his hands moving with practiced efficiency as he inspects the items snatched from the fallen cultists.
Aele holds the Silver Medallion up to the bioluminescent glow of the forest and runs a finger over the Wand of Dark Yew.
Item Aele's Assessment Utility
Silver Medallion A mark of the Third Tier within the Cabal. The seven lashes represent the Seven Watchers of the Deep high Disguise Value. If worn over robes, it could grant a moment’s hesitation from lesser Golems or automated Thothian defenses that have been subverted by the Cabal
Wand of Dark Yew The wood is cold and thirsty. It doesn't hum with healing; it vibrates with Force Wand of Magic Missiles (3 charges remaining). It requires no attunement for a Wizard, but its distinct "black yew" construction is a signature of the Cabal’s enforcers.
Aele says "The wand is a weapon of the Cabal, Dorn. If we carry it openly, we might pass for a collection of 'Gleaners' bringing in a prize—provided we keep our faces shadowed. But the heretic said the 'Mother of Scorpions' can smell the Scarab. A disguise might get us through the hallway, but it won't fool the priestess."
Aele gives the wand of magic missiles to Thistle and the silver medallion to Cabe, who wears it. "Slide the wand through your belt, Thistle, where it's clearly visible."
Aele says "The wand is a weapon of the Cabal, Dorn. If we carry it openly, we might pass for a collection of 'Gleaners' bringing in a prize—provided we keep our faces shadowed. Aele gives the wand of magic missiles to Thistle and the silver medallion to Cabe, who wears it. "Slide the wand through your belt, Thistle, where it's clearly visible."
The "Mother of Scorpions" is entrenched at the Hall of Records, the very place where the party previously bypassed the Seal of Ma'at. To reach the Hall of Cylinders and use the Resonance Chisel, you must either fight through her "nest" or find a way to bypass her surveillance.
Dorn asks Aele, "Can you use the knowledge you gained from the Sovereign to find a ventilation shaft or maintenance tunnel that bypasses the main administrative hub? We've got to return to the Hall of Records quickly, but it sure would be nice if we arrived with enough juice left to take on this Mother of Scorpions."
Aele nods, his fingers tracing the intricate carvings on his agate focus. The mention of the Sovereign of the Mushroom Forest brings a look of intense concentration to his face. "The Sovereign didn't just give me the Scarab, Dorn; it shared the breath of the forest. I can feel the ventilation patterns—the way the old Thothian engineers moved air through these depths to keep the spores from stagnating."
Aele closes his eyes for a moment, the Heart-Seed Scarab pulsing with a soft amber rhythm that seems to synchronize with the faint hum of the dungeon's ancient life-support systems.
"There is a maintenance conduit," Aele whispers, pointing toward a vertical shaft hidden behind a massive cluster of shelf-fungus near the forest's edge. "It was used by the Thothian laborers to bypass the formal halls when the Seal of Ma'at was active. It leads directly to the Hall of Cylinders sub-level, coming up behind the administrative archives. We’ll be 'above' the Mother of Scorpions, in the rafters of the Hall of Records."
"Perfect!" Cabe says, draping an arm companionably around Thistle's shoulders. "Let's make haste, Brothers!"
Dorn finds a quiet, shadowed corner near the edge of the market to perform the "split." His fingers, seasoned by years of handling illicit coin and appraising loot, move with a rhythmic efficiency. He doesn't need a scale; he knows the "fire" of a high-quality emerald by its weight and the way it catches the fading light.
He distributes the 2,000 gp in gemstones as follows, ensuring each hero has a hidden pouch tucked away:
Hero % Share Value in Gems Description of Parcel
Dorn 40% 800 gp two large, deep-green emeralds
Aele 40% 800 gp collection of clear saphires; one 'heart' emerald
Cabe 15% 300 gp handful of small sapphire chips
Thistle 5% 100 gp a single, modest emerald and a few sapphire fragments
Dorn grins at Cabe's wide eyes as he receives a share of precious gemstones. Aele hands Thistle his parcel. "Don't be flashy with these, lad."
Thistle shakes his head. "I've never been this wealthy!" Thistle looks at his 100 gp emerald with wide eyes. "I've spent years copying scrolls for two copper a page," he whispers, tucking the gem into a hidden seam in his new chainmail. "Dorn, I think I like this 'Brother Briar' fellow more than the last guy I was."
Cabe nods, satisfied with the light weight. "Easier to run with these than a 50-pound golden chest-piece. And if we get cornered, a man can swallow 300 gold easier than he can hide a maul."
Aele secures his share, his mind already drifting to the Sealed Map. "The distribution is wise. If one of us falls or is taken, the wealth of the mission survives with the others. But we should not linger. The Crow-Feathers are curious, and the air in Newmarket is thick with eyes."
The Current Standing of the Delve Brotherhood
  • Liquid Assets: 2,000 gp (Gems) + 240 gp (Voss's Coin) + 45 gp (carried by Dorn) + 800 gp (hidden in their Gosterwick townhouse) = 3,085 gp Total.
  • Current Gear: Dorn still carries the Resonance Chisel; Thistle is now armored in Chainmail & Buckler.
  • Next Goal: The Way-Station on Level 4 via the Screaming Vents.
Dorn purchases additional delving supplies for the group. Rather than paying for a room in a town where the "Crow-Feathers" know they've just come into wealth, Dorn and Aele decide it is safer to put some miles between themselves and the market.
The four men spend the evening hiking back toward the Swift River. By the time the twin moons of Issenda rise, they are back in the familiar, rugged foothills leading toward the megadungeon. They find a defensible spot—a limestone cleft that masks their firelight.
Dorn spends an hour scraping the last of the "merchant soot" off his gear. He’s no longer pretending to be a destitute sellsword. He polishes Swift, and the blade glows with a faint, blue light that reflects in his eyes. He feels the weight of the Resonance Chisel in his pack—a tool that might be the key to the entire fourth level.
Cabe maintains the active bond between himself, Dorn, and Aele. He sits on the edge of the light, eyes darting toward the shadows. He knows that while they escaped Newmarket, the Gosterwick Magistrate will eventually realize Captain Voss isn't coming back.
Aele takes a moment during the quiet of the evening camp to observe Thistle. He reaches out with the mental and spiritual "tether" of the blood-bond, attempting to weave the young cleric into the shared connection he holds with Dorn and Cabe.
However, as the bond approaches Thistle's mind, it encounters a strange, crystalline resistance—not a wall of hostility, but a hum of psychic static. It’s the signature of Thistle’s nascent psionic talent. Like two magnets of the same pole, the primal magic of the blood-bond and the raw potential of Thistle’s mind simply cannot occupy the same space.
Thistle looks up, blinking as if shaking off a mild headache. "I felt... something, Aele. Like a distant bell ringing in my ears. But I don't think I can join that circle of yours. My mind is... a bit crowded, I suppose."
Cabe nods solemnly from the shadows. "The bond is a heavy weight, lad. Perhaps it's for the best. You'll be our 'quiet' observer—the one whose thoughts aren't echoed in our own."
To determine if the night passes in peace or peril, we must consult the dice. The author rolls a d6: on a 1, the darkness brings a visitor.
The Roll: [4]
The night is quiet. The only sounds are the rhythmic rush of the Swift River and the soft, metallic clink of Thistle adjusting his new chainmail in his sleep. The "psionic static" around the young cleric seems to act as a strange, silent ward; perhaps the local predators sense a mind they cannot easily categorize and choose easier prey.
The Brothers of the Deep stir as the first light touches the limestone cliffs. After a quick meal of dried rations, Aele leads the group through the morning rituals.
  • Thoth’s Balm & Comfort: Aele prepares these as per his habit.
  • Thoth’s Champion: Prepared and ready for the first sign of trouble.
  • Blood-Bond: Cabe re-attunes the connection.
He feels the familiar, steady heartbeats of Dorn and Aele, while Thistle remains a distinct, isolated presence—a "blind spot" in the collective sensory web.
Cabe says, as the foursome march north, paralleling the Swift River, "Should we invest in potions? Is there even anywhere nearby they can be acquired?" He looks at Aele as if addressing his question primarily to the party's senior priest.
Aele slows his pace, the Heart-Seed Scarab catching the morning light as he considers Cabe’s question. He glances toward the looming shadow of the mountain where the Sign of the Broken Head sits, a beacon of (relative) civilization in the waste.
"A prudent thought, Cabe," Aele replies, his voice carrying the measured tone of a scholar. "In the Hall of Records, we saw canopic jars that might have held ancient elixirs, but those are as likely to be poison as they are panacea after ten thousand years. For reliable draughts, our options are limited."
"The innkeeper there, a man of many secrets, often keeps a small stock of Healing Salves or Anti-venoms for desperate delvers. They are expensive—expect to pay double the guild price—but they are tested."
"We could have found them in Gosterwick, but given our recent 'business' with Captain Voss’s gear, returning there now would be... unwise. We wouldn't anybody to connect his disappearance with our reappearance."
"There are rumors of a blind herbalist who dwells in the Mushroom Forest on Level 3. Since we carry the Sovereign’s Scarab, he might be inclined to trade with us, though his 'potions' often have... side effects."
Thistle speaks up. "We will meet someone in the Halls that can help us in this regard."
Aele studies him for a moment. "Care to explain?"
Thistle shrugs, "I don't really know how I know that. But there is a place in my mind where sometimes strange knowledge bubbles up."
"Like something unpleasant? A memory you have buried way down deep?" Cabe asks.
"No, not really. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's information I'd have never guessed a poorly scribe from Burdock's Valley would know."
Aele’s eyes narrow, but not with suspicion—more with the clinical curiosity of a man who has spent his life studying the unseen. He looks at the "psionic static" he felt earlier, realizing that Thistle’s mind isn't just a closed door; it’s a radio tuned to a frequency the rest of them can't hear.
"The Akashic drift," Aele murmurs, referencing an obscure Thothian theory. "Sometimes the soul taps into the collective memory of the world, or perhaps the dungeon itself is speaking to your latent talent, Thistle."
Cabe shifts his weight, his hand resting on the hilt of his weapon. "As long as it’s a 'healer' and not a 'horror' your mind is conjuring, I’m willing to trust the hunch. But if that 'strange knowledge' starts telling you to open doors we’ve specifically marked as Do Not Touch, we're going to have a talk."
The party decides to make a brief stop at the Sign of the Broken Head before the final descent. The stone walls of the inn are thick, scarred by centuries of use and the occasional siege. As they push through the heavy oak doors, the smell of woodsmoke and sour ale greets them.
The common room is sparse. A few grim-faced mercenaries sit in the corners, their eyes tracking your gear—especially Swift at Dorn's hip and the unmistakable Heart-Seed Scarab on Aele's chest.
A man with a face like a crumpled map and a missing ear leans over the bar. He wipes a glass with a rag that has seen better decades.
"Thothians," Barnaby grunts, his eyes lingering on Thistle’s new chainmail. "Don't see many of your lot coming back from the deeps with their skin still attached. You looking for a room, or are you just here to breathe air that doesn't taste like tomb-dust?"
Dorn steps forward. "Information first, Barnaby. And perhaps a look at your private stock. We're heading back down—Level 4. Heard anything about the Screaming Vents lately?"
Barnaby spits into a bucket. "The Vents? You’re brave or suicidal. Word is the Cabal of the Violet Eye has been moving more 'sentinels' into the pipes. They’re looking for someone—or something—that breached the Hall of Records a few days back. Some say the 'Weight of Ma'at' was lifted."
He looks Aele dead in the eye. "If that was you... you’re walking into a hornet's nest."
Dorn notices that while the Iron-Jaws are focused on their fatigue, the hooded duo at the back stopped whispering the moment that he mentioned the Screaming Vents.
Barnaby leans in closer, his voice a low gravelly rasp. "The lads by the fire just came up from the second level. Said the goblins are stirred up because something 'purple and glowing' moved through the lower ventilation shafts. If I were you, I’d be careful who I talk to about 'lifting weights' in the Hall of Records. Walls here have ears, and ears are often attached to people who get paid in Gilder silver."
Dorn pays 5 gp for a round of decent liquor for everyone. "Let's eat a good meal, boys. We don't know when the next hot one will be coming our way." After Barnaby takes their orders, he leads the party to a booth about fifteen feet from the solemn pair of figures in dark, hooded cloaks. Far enough away to not appear to be eavesdropping, but close enough to keep a careful eye on them and see if the free drinks elicit any response.
Barnaby's eyes light up at the sight of the gold. He moves with surprising agility, pouring a round of "The Black Drop"—a potent, dark-aged brandy that smells of peat and burnt sugar.
"To the Brothers of the Deep!" Barnaby calls out, setting the glasses on the bar.
The Iron-Jaws at the fireplace raise their mugs with weary nods of appreciation; they aren't much for conversation, but they respect a man who buys a round. The Lone Scholar barely pauses his pen, though he pulls his glass toward him like a reflex.
The response from the Hooded Figures is more calculated. They don't raise their glasses in a toast. Instead, the one leaning back reaches out a gloved hand and slowly slides the glass toward the center of their table. He doesn't drink. He simply looks toward your booth, his face obscured by the deep cowl, and offers a slow, deliberate nod of acknowledgment.
It wasn't a "thank you." It was a "we see you."
Barnaby brings out four bowls of a thick, savory stew made of root vegetables and salted mutton, along with a loaf of crusty black bread. As you eat, the low-level hum of the common room provides a perfect acoustic screen. Dorn uses his thief-trained hearing to filter out the crackle of the fire and the scratching of the scholar’s pen.
Even from fifteen feet, Dorn catches snippets of the hooded duo's conversation. They aren't talking about Gosterwick or bounties.
"...the resonance is shifting," the whispering one says. "...if the Chisel is active, the seals on the Fourth Cylinder will be brittle."
The other one responds in a voice like dry parchment: "The Thothians are dead. If someone has the tool, they are either ghosts or fools. Either way, the High Priest wants the Eye to follow the vibration. We wait for the signal from the Vents."
Thistle, sensing the shift in the room's psychic energy, leans in close to Aele. "The 'static' is getting louder," he whispers, his voice barely audible over the clatter of spoons. "Those two... their minds feel like cold iron. They aren't here for the drink."
Cabe keeps his back to the wall, his hand resting on the bench near his side. He is ready to activate the Blood-Bond at a moment’s notice.
Dorn spoons stew and thinks: The hooded duo know about the Resonance Chisel and the Vents. They are likely agents or scouts for the Cabal of the Violet Eye or a rival faction interested in the Fourth Level. Dorn's fine-honed underworld skills tell him something more: They seem to be waiting for a "signal" before moving.
Dorn makes eye contact with Cabe. As the big fighter stuffs another piece of bread in his mouth, he momentarily lays three fingers alongside his nose. Cabe sees it and scratches an ear to acknowledge the silent message: danger nearby; we may be attacked.
Unfortunately, the founding members of the Brothers of the Deep haven't had time to teach Thistle this secret language. But Cabe waits until Aele makes eye contact and then dips his index finger momentarily into his ale.
Aele catches the signal instantly. The "dip of the finger" is an old tactical code within the bond—a warning that the waters are about to get murky. He subtly adjusts the Heart-Seed Scarab at his chest, ensuring the focus is ready for an immediate ritual or surge.
Thistle, despite being the "blind spot" in the group's secret language, isn't oblivious. He sees the sudden, sharp intensity in Dorn’s gaze and the way Cabe has stopped chewing, his jaw tight. The young cleric feels the "psionic static" in the room rise to a piercing hum. He doesn't need a hand signal to know that the atmosphere has shifted from a tavern meal to a pre-combat standoff.
The hooded figures remain motionless, but the one who nodded to Dorn now has his hand hidden beneath the table—likely on the hilt of a blade or a concealed focus. The "High Priest" they mentioned and their knowledge of the Resonance Chisel marks them as something far more dangerous than simple street thugs. These are Inquisitors of the Eye, or perhaps agents of the Cabal, and they are currently evaluating whether to strike you here or follow you into the dark.
Barnaby, sensing the sudden drop in temperature in the room, quietly slides a heavy iron bar onto the shelf beneath the bar. He’s seen this play out a hundred times.
Dorn finishes his drink, the glass hitting the wooden table with a deliberate clack.
"Good stew, Barnaby," Dorn says, his voice loud enough to carry. "Almost makes a man want to stay on the surface." He looks directly at the hooded pair. "Almost."
Dorn’s performance is masterful. He catches his foot on the leg of the bench, letting out a slightly-too-loud laugh and a lazy wave to the room. To anyone watching, he looks like a mercenary who’s just spent a significant portion of his payday on liquid courage.
Barnaby, playing his part in the dance of the tavern, catches the 200 gp Dorn slides across the scarred wood. With a practiced motion, he ducks under the counter and produces two vials of thick, swirling crimson liquid. "Safe travels, 'Brother Briar,'" Barnaby says with a knowing grunt, tucking the gold away.
As the group shifts toward the door, Cabe and Aele form a loose "V" around Thistle, shielding the young cleric from any sudden movement from the back of the room.
The two hooded figures don't move. They watch Dorn’s "stumble" with the cold, unblinking focus of raptors. The one with the gloved hand doesn't reach for his glass; his fingers remain motionless under the table. They aren't buying the act, but they aren't stopping you either. They seem content to let you lead the way into the Maw.
As the party push through the heavy front doors, the chill mountain air hits their faces, snapping the group, if possible, into a state of even higher alert. The sun is high, but the interior of the Great Maw—the entrance to Arden Vul—looms just a hundred yards away, a dark hole in the world that seems to swallow the light.
The heroes stand at the entrance of the ruins. Behind them is the relative safety of the tavern; ahead is the descent toward the Pump Station and the Screaming Vents.
"They're going to follow us," Cabe whispers, his hand tightening on his weapon. "They aren't going to let that 'signal' go to waste."
Thistle looks at the dark entrance, his brow furrowed. "The static is quieter now that we're outside, but it's changing pitch. It's... humming. Like the map Aele was showing us."
After the Brothers of the Deep are fifty yards from the inn, moving toward The Maw, Dorn says, "Change of plans. Those two are part of a cabal, or perhaps servants of the Cult of Set. I heard them mention 'the high priestess', and word is the Set Cult has a high priestess. They might be able to track or sense the resonance chisel. I doubt it. More likely, they're simply hunting for it and I drew their attention by stupidly mentioning the Screaming Vents out loud. Sorry guys. But I think we have an opportunity to play two sets of enemies against each other. Here's what we're going to do..."
And Dorn quickly outlines the plan: rather than heading for the Screaming Vents, the four will instead descend to Level 3 and seek out the halflings. "We let on like we've just come from the Inn and overheard a pair of hooded sorcerers planning to wipe out the halflings and take their place as extortioners in the dungeon. You know that's the sort of thing they surely fear will happen."
Aele catches on. "Ah, and if the hooded ones follow us there, they are either extraordinary trackers or else have some magical means of tracking us, such as a fix on the Resonance Chisel."
"Clever," says Cabe. "If they follow us, the halflings will likely attack first and ask questions never. "We may even gain credibility with the Small Ones."
Dorn’s grin returns, though this time it’s sharp and predatory. The "stumble" from the inn is gone, replaced by the low-slung, efficient stride of a man who has spent years outmaneuvering the Prelm city watch.
"Exactly," Dorn says, glancing back toward the stone silhouette of the Broken Head. "If they're tracking the Chisel, they'll walk right into a hornets' nest of halfling sling-stones and traps. If they aren't tracking it, we’ve successfully shaken them and bolstered our standing with the only folks in this hole who have a decent trade network."
The party adjusts their heading. Instead of the direct mechanical descent toward the Pump Station, they navigate the upper-level "Maw" bypasses to reach the Great Stairs.
Aele keeps the Resonance Chisel wrapped in a lead-lined pouch he used for spell components, hoping to dampen any "leakage" of its harmonic signature.
Cabe stays at the rear, eyes fixed on the shadows behind them. He’s looking for the tell-tale shimmer of a displacement spell or the silent footfalls of the hooded duo.
Thistle seems remarkably calm. "The halflings... they have a village in the Mushroom Forest, right? My mind... it’s telling me they have a brewer there who makes a tea from white caps that clears the head. Maybe that’s the 'help' I was sensing."
As they approach the outskirts of the Fungal Forest, the air turns damp and sweet with the smell of spores. The flickering light of small, well-placed lanterns begins to appear in the high crevices—the perimeter watch of the Halfling "Small Ones."
A sharp whistle echoes through the cavern, followed by the dry snick of multiple cross-bows being cocked in the darkness above.
"Hold!" a high, gravelly voice calls out from a mushroom-thicket. "That’s the Thothian and the big man who drinks like a dwarf. And a new one... a little cleric?"
Dorn steps forward, hands open and away from his weapons. "It’s us. We’ve come from the Broken Head with a heavy warning. There are two hooded vultures—sorcerers or cultists—creeping down the stairs behind us. We overheard them talking about 'clearing the forest' to set up a new base for their High Priestess. We ran to warn you before they could get the drop on your scouts."
Aele addresses Griz-Maw, "We are honored to be able to serve a mighty shaman and his king. Tell us, what dangers lie in the Pipe-Tunnels? Are there traps we should be aware of? Our success in this mission would serve to bring well deserved acknowledgement of your value to your people."
Griz-Maw’s milky eyes widen slightly at the mention of his "value to his people." He leans in close, his breath smelling of fermented lichen and damp earth. He spreads the dried skin map out on a stone tablet, tracing the lines with a clawed finger.
"The 'Tall-Magistrate' has a mind like a river—clear and deep," Griz-Maw croaks. "Listen well, Zorael, for the pipes do not forgive."
The Dangers of the Pipe-Tunnels
The Beast-Grease: "The Ruin-Walkers smear the pipes with the fat of their kills. It is slicker than ice. If you run, you fall. If you fall, you slide into the Drain-Grates where the Pipe-Crawlers wait with many legs and many hungers."
The Sound-Snarers: "The Beastmen hang bundles of dry bone and scrap-metal from the ceiling. One bump, and the 'clatter-clatter' tells the Horn-Blower you are coming. He will blow the Big-Horn, and the pipes will fill with fur and rage before you see the Cistern."
The Pressure-Vents: "These pipes once breathed for the Old City. Some still have the 'Hot-Breath.' If you see steam whistling from a seam, do not touch. It will peel the skin from your 'Thrangir' friend even through his black shell."
Griz-Maw looks around to ensure King Weskenim is distracted by the malachite stone, then pulls a small, stoppered vial from his belt. It contains a thick, pungent blue paste.
"The Big-Horn is not just wood and brass," he whispers. "It is bound in Beast-Magic. If the Horn-Blower dies but the horn is intact, another will pick it up. Take this Numbing-Silt. Smear it on the mouthpiece if you can reach it—it will silence the horn's magic for a dozen heartbeats, giving you time to break the wood."
Aele carefully pinches the fine, shimmering Void-Dust and applies it to the party. As the dust settles, a sudden, heavy pressure hits your ears—the absolute silence of the void. The sound of the dripping water, the scraping of Dorn's obsidian plate, and even the heroes' breathing vanish within their individual 5-foot auras.
With the Void-Dust active, the party moves into the Pipe-Tunnels. The effect is surreal. Dorn leads the way, his massive boots coming down on the grease-slicked stone with zero acoustic impact.
As the heroes reach the cluster of ribcages and copper bells, Dorn’s shoulder brushes against a hanging bone. It swings violently, striking a copper bell—but there is no sound. The "clatter-clatter" that would have alerted the entire sector is swallowed by the aura.
At one point, Cabe loses his footing on a particularly thick patch of "Beast-Grease." He slides ten feet down the pipe, his bow clattering against the stone walls. In any other circumstance, this would have been a dinner bell for the Ruin-Walkers. Now, it is a silent movie.
The 10-minute window of the dust is ticking. You navigate two more junctions, following the vibration of the Big-Horn rather than its sound.
The air grows warmer and carries the stench of wet fur and old blood. The pipe opens up ahead into a much larger space. Peering out from the lip of the pipe, our heroes see the Cistern of Skulls, a massive, circular Thothian reservoir. In the center, a raised stone dais holds the Big-Horn—a massive instrument made from the tusk of an ancient behemoth, reinforced with brass bands.
A massive, scarred Beastman with a mane of matted white fur stands at the mouthpiece. He is currently drawing a deep breath to let out another rhythmic blast. Four Ruin-Walkers (Beastmen armed with jagged polearms) circle the dais.
Two Goblins, bound in chains, are kneeling at the edge of the cistern, likely intended as the "payment" for the ritual.
Cabe hands Dorn the magical quiver that is capable of producing flaming arrows when those arrows are fired from a bow. From the cover of darkness, Dorn will be ready with the bow to attempt to light the dais' grease on fire, hopefully while also striking the horn-blower. However, the heores' primary strategy is for Cabe to approach secretively and use a pinch of void-dust on the horn. If he is able to do that, Cabe and his two fellow heroes will then engage the beastmen in deadly combat.
Should Cabe be discovered before he can apply void-dust to the mouthpiece of the Great Horn, then Dorn will fire a flaming arrow at the massive, scarred Beastman in hopes of panicking him so that he won't attempt to blow the horn. If Dorn fires a flaming arrow, he will sacrifice a Fortune Point in order to make the attack roll with Advantage, and Aele will seek to 'aid another' by sacrificing one of his Fortune Points to further raise Dorn's attack rolls by +2.
This is a high-stakes tactical gamble. The heroes have coordinated their roles perfectly: Dorn as the heavy-artillery backup, Aele as the guiding hand, and Cabe as the silent saboteur.
Because Cabe is under the effect of the Void-Dust, his movement makes no sound. However, the Cistern is illuminated by flickering ritual torches. To reach the dais without being seen by the four Ruin-Walker guards, he must use the shadows and the massive Thothian pillars for cover.
Stealth Check (Cabe): Rolling with a bonus for the silence aura.
Result: 19.
Cabe moves like a ghost. He slides through the "Beast-Grease" with predatory grace, reaching the base of the dais just as the scarred Horn-Blower finishes a long exhale, preparing to suck in air for the next thunderous blast.
Cabe reaches up and smears the thick, blue Numbing-Silt (which he received from Griz-Maw) onto the mouthpiece of the Great Horn. Cabe successfully applies the Silt. The Horn-Blower presses his lips to the tusk and blows with all his might. His cheeks puff out, his veins bulge—but nothing happens. Not even a puff of air escapes. The Beastman pulls back, looking at the horn in confused rage.
The Horn-Blower’s confusion is the signal. Seeing that Cabe has not been "discovered" (but has successfully neutralized the horn), Dorn does not need to fire his arrow as a panic-response—he can fire it now as a Deadly Opening Salvo.
Dorn draws an arrow from the Sun-Scribed Quiver. It ignites instantly, a streak of white-hot Thothian flame.
  • Fortune Point Spent (Dorn): Rolling with Advantage.
  • Fortune Point Spent (Aele): +2 Bonus to hit from "Aid Another" (Zorael's tactical shout/guidance).
  • Total To-Hit Roll: [18, 14] + 8 (Base) + 2 (Aele) = 28 to hit.
  • Damage: 1d8 (Longbow) + 1d6 (Fire) + 4 (Str/Great Strike) = 15 Damage.
The arrow buries itself in the Horn-Blower’s shoulder. Simultaneously, the fire spreads to the Beast-Grease coating the dais. Whoosh! The central platform is suddenly a ring of fire!
Combat Initiative: Round 1
The silence auras are still active, but the visual of the burning dais has alerted everyone.
Initiative Order Current Status
Dorn (Thrangir) 19 (Fleet) Dropping the bow, drawing Swift and the Aegis
Cabe (Vedecab) 17 At the base of the burning dais, daggers out
Aele (Zorael) 14 Standing in the tunnel mouth, staff glowing
Beastmen (x5) 9 Surprised. The Horn-Blower is screaming (silently) and on fire
The battle for the Cistern begins in a surreal, flickering silence. The smell of burning "Beast-Grease" and singed fur fills the air as the party capitalizes on their total tactical advantage.
Dorn drops the longbow, the wood clattering silently into the grease. He draws Swift and raises the Aegis of the Firmament. His obsidian plate reflects the orange flames as he barrels toward the closest Ruin-Walker.
Attack Roll: 16 + 10 (vs. Beastmen) = 26 to hit.
Damage: 1d8 + 10 = 17 Damage.
Result: Dorn’s blade cleaves through the guard's rusted mail. The Beastman falls into the burning grease without a sound, his death cry swallowed by Dorn's silence aura.
Seeing the Horn-Blower distracted by the flaming arrow in his shoulder, Cabe lunges from the base of the dais to gut the nearest guard.Attack Roll: 14 + 6 = 20 to hit.Damage: 1d6 + 4 = 9 Damage. Cabe decides to forego use of the Red Frenzy, at least for the current combat round.Regeneration: Cabe recovers 1 HP at the start of the round (Blood-Bond passive).
Aele stands at the tunnel mouth, his Staff of the Silver Tongue glowing. He triggers his prepared ritual, Thoth's Comfort.
Effect: Dorn, Cabe, and Aele each gain +1 HP, +1 AAC, and +1 to Saving Throws for the remainder of the combat.
Dorn's Current AAC: 27 (Standard 25 + Swift 1 + Thoth's Comfort 1).
Dorn steps onto the burning dais, his obsidian boots crunching through the flaming grease. He swings Swift at the scarred leader.
Attack Roll: 12 + 10 = 22 to hit.
Damage: $1d8 + 10 = 18 Damage.
Result: The Horn-Blower has now taken 33 total damage.
He is reeling, his matted white fur charred and his shoulder ruined.
He drops the greataxe and tries to scramble
away toward the back of the Cistern.
Cabe maintains his pressure on the guards while activating his primal link.
Constrict Their Heart (Free Action):
1d4 damage on the guard he injured last round.
Roll: 3 damage.
Twin Daggers: He lunges at the same guard.
Roll: 18 + 6 = 24 to hit.
Damage: 1d6 + 4 = 9 Damage.
Result: The second guard collapses, clutching his chest
as his heart rhythm fails under Cabe's influence.
Seeing the Beastmen clustering around Dorn, Aele raises his Staff of the Silver Tongue.
Spend 1 Surge: (1d6 + 4). Roll: 8 Radiant Damage.
Effect: A burst of Thothian light erupts within the silence
aura. The two remaining guards must save vs. Spells or
take full damage.
Result: Both fail. They are seared by the white light,
their skin blistering.
Hero    Current HP  AAC Notes
Dorn    44/46   27  Wielding Swift (+10/+10 vs. Beastmen).
Aele    41/41   19  3 Surges remaining.
Cabe    41/42   19  Regenerated 1 HP; 2 guards down.
The Horn-Blower is broken and fleeing toward a dark tunnel at the rear of the reservoir. Two guards are dead, and the remaining two are heavily wounded and blinded by Aele's light. The Big-Horn sits abandoned on the burning dais, silenced by the Numbing-Silt.
Aele will hit the fleeing Beastman with a radiant surge. Dorn and Cabe chase the beastman, just in case Aele's attack doesn't kill it.
Aele spends his second Surge of the day. A bolt of pure, white radiance streaks silently through the air, chasing the white-furred Beastman toward the tunnel mouth.
Calculation: 1d6 + 4 (Aele re-rolls 1s and 2s via Adept/Savant)
Roll: [2 -> 5] + 4 = 9 Radiant Damage.
Result: The blast catches the Horn-Blower square in the back.
Already weakened by Dorn's arrow and blade, the radiant
energy is too much. His body stiffens, smoke rising from
his matted fur, and he collapses face-first into the grease
just inches from the tunnel's exit. The Horn-Blower is dead.
With the leader down, Dorn and Cabe do not break their stride. They turn their attention to the two remaining Ruin-Walkers who were blinded by Aele's previous burst.
Dorn’s Opportunity: He uses his Fleet initiative to intercept the first guard.
Attack: 19 + 10 = 29 to hit.
Damage: $1d8 + 10 = 15 Damage.
(The guard is annihilated).
Cabe’s Opportunity: He pivots toward the last guard, daggers flashing.
Attack: 15 + 6 = 21 to hit.
Damage: $1d6 + 4 = 10 Damage.
Result: The final guard falls.
The silence auras of the Void-Dust are still active for a few more minutes, making the aftermath of the slaughter eerily quiet. The only movement is the flickering of the flames on the central dais and the frantic squirming of the two bound Goblin prisoners.
Post-Combat Status:
Hero Current HP Status
Dorn 44/46 1 FP used (2 remain)
Aele 41/41 2/4 Surges remain; 1 FP used (2 remain)
Cabe 42/42 Full HP (regen & blood-bind)
The Great Horn stands on the dais, its mouth covered in the blue alchemical silt. Nearby, the bodies of the five Beastmen contain various trinkets, but the most pressing matters are the Goblins.
The two Goblins are staring the heroes with wide, terrified eyes. They haven't heard a single sound—no clashing of steel, no screams, no spells. To them, these tall, pale-skins appear like vengeful ghosts who simply moved through the room and left a trail of bodies.
Dorn will destroy the Horn after examining it to ensure it doesn't contain any valuables, engravings, etc. Cabe will stand watch over the bound goblins until the silence effects expires. He doesn't want to free them prematurely, given their state of fear: they might panic. Aele searches the Beastmen corpses for valuables.
The silence persists as the heroes set to work, the only movement being the flickering orange light from the burning grease.
Dorn approaches the massive tusk-instrument. Before bringing down his heavy blade, he wipes away a section of the blue silt to inspect the craftsmanship.
Dorn stays his hand just as he was about to deliver the final, crushing blow. He carefully pries the three unpolished Bloodstones from the brass bands, tucking them into his pouch before stepping back to let Aele perform his investigation.
After the silence effect expires, Aele closes his eyes, chanting the rhythmic Thothian syllables for Detect Magic. His vision shifts, allowing him to see the "veins" of energy flowing through the room.
The horn itself is not inherently magical. It is a masterwork of natural acoustics, though it has been "conditioned" by the Numbing-Silt. However, the brass bands that held the bloodstones pulse with a faint, lingering Evocation aura. It appears the horn was designed to amplify sound to a level that could cause physical deafness or structural tremors if blown with enough force—but the magic required the bloodstones to act as "batteries."
Aele’s fingers trace the Thothian geometry of the scroll tube as he begins a low, resonant hum. The pitch shifts, mimicking the harmonic vibrations of the Archive’s tuning forks.
The Scroll Tube: As Aele hits the final "Thothian Harmonic," the pulsing blue light of the Abjuration seal flickers and fades. The wax turns to fine grey ash. The tube can now be open safely, and Aele does so.
Inside is a sheet of Vellum of the Eternal Eye. It contains a detailed schematic of the Cistern’s pressure valves and a handwritten note in a refined, archaic script: "To the Keeper of the Horn—should the Great Valve fail, the fallback is the Dry-Well. The Copper Trunk remains in the False-Bottom of the Sluice."
Aele’s Detect Magic reveals this is a "Soul-Shriven Locket." It is designed to capture the final breath of a dying creature. If worn during a kill, it stores a charge that can be used to stabilize the wearer if they fall to 0 HP (acting as an automatic Second Breath). However, it currently feels cold and "empty."
Dorn realizes that lugging a four-foot prehistoric tusk through narrow, grease-slicked pipes is a recipe for a broken neck (or at least a very loud, very accidental clatter). He unbuckles the silk rope, letting the massive horn slide from his back with a grunt of relief.
After a quick survey of the Cistern, Dorn spots a dry drainage alcove situated behind one of the massive Thothian pillars. It’s elevated enough to stay above the "Beast-Grease" flow and obscured by the shadow of the pillar and the lingering smoke from the dais. Dorn slides the horn into the alcove and covers it with the discarded, foul-smelling red cape of a fallen Ruin-Walker. "Maybe we can retrieve the horn later. I think it would fetch quite a price."
Aele uses his Golden Stylus to etch a small, barely visible Thothian "Seal of Secrecy" on the stone floor near the base of the pillar. To a casual observer, it’s just a scratch; to the party, it’s the "X" on the map.
With the horn hidden, Dorn’s Initiative and Stealth penalties are removed. He re-packs his silk rope and iron spikes, his movements returning to their usual martial efficiency.
While Dorn secures the trophy, Aele spreads the Vellum of the Eternal Eye across his knee. The archaic Thothian script is dense, but the diagram is clear.
The Dry-Well: The schematic confirms one of the goblins — Pips’ — story. The Dry-Well isn't actually a well for water; it was an Acoustic Pressure Valve.
Checking the Oracle: The diagram shows a "False Bottom" in the Sluice leading to the well. It indicates that the Copper Trunk (the key) is hidden behind a stone plate that only moves if a specific pressure is applied to the rim of the well.
To reach the Dry-Well, you must pass through the "Slippery-Stairs," a series of stepped stone weirs that are likely coated in years of congealed grime.
Pips and his fellow goblin, sensing that the heroes aren't going to execute them, have become chatty. "The Ruin-Walkers don't go into the Dry-Well," Pips whispers. "They say it screams. But it's just the wind in the pipes, yes? Just the wind?"
Aele takes a moment of quiet focus amidst the lingering smell of ozone and burnt grease. He holds the Soul-Shriven Locket in his palm, humming a low Thothian dirge that resonates with the necromantic silver.
As Aele channels his focus, the cold silver of the soul-shriven locket begins to pulse with a faint, rhythmic heartbeat of violet light.
Aele feels a tether form between his own life force and the silver screaming face.
Current State: The locket is uncharged.
Function: To activate its protective power, the locket must be "fed" the final breath of a formidable foe (a creature of at least 2 Hit Dice) slain by the party. Once charged, it will hang dormant until the wearer is reduced to below 1 HP, at which point it shatters, instantly restoring 2d8 HP to the wearer.
The Choice: Aele clips the silver chain around his neck, the cold metal resting against his Thothian robes.
"Dorn gathers everyone together. "All right. Let's rest for fifteen minutes, then we'll press onward."
Aele steps out from the sub-vault stairs, the silver moonstone of his staff casting long, regal shadows across the stacks of the Grand Archive. He raises the Silver Signet high, the ring catching the light.
The Social Check: High Thothian Command Aele’s Charisma is 12 (+0), but he has several situational modifiers:
  • The Silver Signet: Status of authority (+2)
  • High Thothian Language: Native-level command of the "Master" tongue (+2)
  • The Staff of the Silver Tongue: A magical implement of persuasion (+1)
The Roll: 17
The Modifiers: +5
Total Result: 22
Aele speaks with a voice that carries the resonance of a cathedral. "Warden of the Silken Veil! The Architect's rhythm has failed, but the Golden Spark has been restored to the Aerator. We are the Overseer's agents. Open the Archive passage and resume your vigil. We depart to ensure the Pump Station's integrity!"
The White Silk Warden’s head tilts with a slow, dry sound of shifting linen. For a moment, its red eyes flare, analyzing the frequency of Aele's voice and the magical signature of the Signet.
The Warden bows its head in a stiff, mechanical gesture of acknowledgment. It steps back three paces, merging into the shadows of a massive stone shelf dedicated to Applied Necromancy. It emits a low, synthesized rasp:
"The... breath... must... continue... Proceed... Magistrate."
Cabe lets out a long whistle of relief. "Magistrate, huh? I could get used to that."
Dorn doesn't lower his shield, but the tension in his shoulders eases. "Don't get too comfortable. Let's move while it still thinks we're the bosses."
The trio marches out of the Archive and back into the main hallway. They pass the Armored Warden, who remains perfectly still in its alcove, surrounded by the charred and broken remains of the Beastmen. The bronze giant does not even twitch as the obsidian-clad Dorn and the staff-bearing Aele pass by.
The heroes reach the threshold of the Pump Station. The air here is noticeably fresher than it was ten minutes ago. The erratic sparks and violent shaking have been replaced by a deep, rhythmic thrum—the Active Soul-Core Aele slaved to the desk is working perfectly.
However, the heroes see that the rising water has left a slick of black sludge across the floor. More importantly, the central cooling tank is venting a strange, pale-green vapor.
Aele cross-references the visual of the vapor with his knowledge of Thothian Alchemy and his active Detect Magic.
"It is not a poison gas in the traditional sense," Aele explains, his voice muffled behind the crook of his elbow. "It is Chlorine-Ozone exhaust. The Soul-Core is forcing the ancient pumps to work harder than they have in centuries. The 'Architect' we killed was a biological buffer; without him, the machinery is 'sweating' this corrosive byproduct to keep from melting down. Probably not deadly, but could be quite uncomfortable if we stick around."
The "Great Aerator" is humming with a power it hasn't felt in an age. The Soul-Core is pulsing with a deep golden light inside its housing, and the air flow to the upper levels of Arden Vul is actually cleaner and stronger than when our heroes first arrived. They have successfully "saved" the life-support of this sector of the megadungeon.
Cabe looks at the green mist curling around his boots. "So the air is good, but the floor is melting. Standard Arden Vul hospitality. What's the play, Dorn?"
Dorn looks toward the exit leading back to the "marbled halls" and the Overseer’s Sanctum. "We have the gear, we have the keys, and we have the Archive's secrets. But the air is only stable as long as that Soul-Core holds out."
The green vapor is beginning to sting the heroes' eyes, and the "Manual Override" at the Overseer's desk won't last forever. The Archive is secure for now, but the Beastmen were just the scouts.
Dorn looks at the circular iron lift plate. "Aele, use that golden stylus. If we can get this lift moving, we can bypass the main halls and strike at the heart of the Goblin level. That’s where the real treasure—and the XP we need—is hiding. But before we try to repair the lift, let's spike open the stairs to the armory, so that the entrance doesn't close behind us."
Dorn pulls two Iron Spikes from his pack. He jams them into the seam where the lapis lazuli floor meets the stone housing of the stairs. With a few heavy strikes from the pommel of his sword, he wedges the mechanism open. The stone floor groans, trying to slide back into place, but the spikes hold firm. The "Thothian Armory" is now a secured bolt-hole.
The party returns to the circular iron lift plate in the sub-vault. Aele kneels, the Golden Stylus (Wand of Mending) in one hand and the Copper and Brass Keys in the other.
Aele inserts the keys into their respective slots—the cogwheel and the leaf. As he turns them, he feels the rusted tumblers resist. He touches the Golden Stylus to the central axle of the lift plate. A warm, honey-colored light flows from the stylus, seeping into the iron like oil.
The Repair: The screeching of metal-on-metal softens into a smooth, rhythmic click. The Mending magic knits together the hairline fractures in the ancient chains and clears the centuries of calcified dust from the gears.
The Power Source: Because Aele slaved the Soul-Core to the Archive's grid earlier, the lift plate begins to hum. A series of Thothian runes along the edge of the platform glow a faint, ghostly blue.
The party retreats from the lift platform for a moment, sliding back into the Thothian Armory. With the stairs spiked open and the Silver Signet still marking this as "Authorized Territory," the heroes are able to settle into a deep, restorative sleep amidst the racks of ancient steel.
The silence of the armory is profound. Aele spends the time in meditation, realigning his spirit with the "Great Breath" of Thoth.
  • Aele's Surges: Fully restored to 3/3 Daily Surges.
  • Aele's Rituals: He prepares Thoth's Balm
  • Aele's Rituals: He prepares Thoth's Comfort
    • An extra activation of Thoth's Balm is available via Aele's magical armor
  • Dorn's Fortune: Restored to 3/3 Fortune Points.
  • Dorn's Health: He draws Swift upon waking, gaining +1d4 Temporary HP (Current: 34 + 3 Temp).
The lift settles into a torch-lit cavern (Level 4). The four goblins by the fire pit have just enough time to look up—their yellow eyes widening at the sight of the Obsidian-clad Dorn—before the heroes act.
Aele raises his staff and says, "Peace! Do not attack, for we are ambassadors sent to bring a gift to your king!" Aele’s voice carries a practiced weight, utilizing his Staff of the Silver Tongue to amplify his presence.
The cavern falls into a sudden, tense silence. The four goblins, who were scrambling for their jagged spears, freeze mid-motion. The sight of a shimmering moonstone staff and a man clad in obsidian glass is enough to give even the most bloodthirsty goblin pause.
The largest of the four, wearing a Thothian bronze bracer as a belt buckle, lowers his spear slightly. He squints at the Silver Signet on Aele’s hand. He doesn’t know what a "Magistrate" is, but he knows that ring looks like the "Old Bosses" who used to run the deep halls.
"Ambassadors?" the goblin rasps in broken Common, his tongue flicking over yellowed teeth. "The king does not like... surprises. But he does like gifts."
He looks at Dorn's Aegis of the Firmament shield with unconcealed greed, then back to Aele. "What gift you bring? Shiny? Gold? Meat? Or maybe... more of the Golden Sparks?" (He points toward the lift, likely sensing the power Aele used to activate it).
The surprise round has effectively ended, transitioning into a social encounter. However, the goblins haven't sounded the alarm yet. Behind them, you see a rickety wooden bridge spanning a dark chasm, leading toward a larger, flickering glow—the goblin "city."
Cabe keeps his hand on his quiver, whispering to Dorn: "Ambassadors, huh? Hope you brought something better than a 'hello' in your pack, because if that gift isn't good, we're going to be fighting a whole tribe on a bridge."
Dorn lifts the suit of gleaming chainmail, which he no longer needs thanks to his plate armor. "For you," he says while looking at the goblin who is wearing a bracer, "we bring this shiny armor. It was once worn by a great hero. For your king, we bring a gift which we may only reveal to him." Dorn surrenders the chainmail armor, laying it reverently between the heroes and the goblins.
The lead goblin’s eyes go wide, the pupils dilating until they are nearly all black. He looks at the Chainmail, then at his own "belt" made of a single bracer, then back at the gleaming links of steel. To a goblin scavenger, a full suit of human-sized chainmail isn't just armor—it’s a treasury.
He creeps forward, his long, spindly fingers twitching. He touches the cold metal, his breath hitching. "Shiny... heavy shiny," he whispers. With a sudden shriek of command, he barks at the other three goblins. They scramble forward, picking up the mail with exaggerated reverence, though they nearly trip over the weight of it.
"You... you are big-gift-bringers," the leader says, bowing so low his nose nearly touches the cavern floor. "I am Snik. Snik leads you to the Great Hall. King Bugthrak will see you. But..." He eyes the weapons. "King is... nervous king. He has many biters. You keep steel in skin-bags (sheaths) while we walk?"
Cabe looks at Dorn and Aele, his hand hovering near his flaming arrows. "In their dreams. But we can keep them sheathed for the walk, as long as they don't get 'sticky fingers' on the way."
"Sure," says Dorn. "We'll keep our weapons in our skin bags, unless we are attacked. But we will never surrender our weapons. Our king so commands."
Snik and his crew lead the heroes across the rickety wooden bridge. Far below can be heard the rush of an underground river. The cavern opens into a massive grotto where the goblins have built a literal shantytown into the ruins of ancient Thothian cisterns.
As our trio walks with their goblin escort, the "Magistrate" aura of Aele and the "Obsidian Giant" presence of Dorn keep the hundreds of lurking goblins at bay. They hiss and whisper from the shadows, but the sight of the gleaming chainmail being paraded as a "Hero’s Gift" creates a path of awed silence.
The trio passes through the great elephant-carved archway. The atmosphere here is thick with the smell of roasting mountain-goat and the copper tang of goblin-steel.
King Weskenim does not sit as a typical gluttonous chieftain would. He is wiry, his skin the color of bruised plums, and his eyes possess a cold, calculating intelligence that is rare among his kind. He sits atop a "throne" composed of stacked stone tablets and scavenged Thothian architectural fragments. Beside him, the Shaman—Griz-Maw—stirs a pot of bubbling, phosphorescent lichen.
"Snik!" Weskenim’s voice is like the crack of a whip. "Who are these tall-things? And why does one wear the skin of a shadow?" He gestures a long, dirt-caked finger at Dorn’s Obsidian Plate.
Snik drops the chainmail at the King's feet with a heavy clink. "Ambassadors, Great Weskenim! They bring 'The Hero’s Skin' for us, and a Secret Gift for you!"
Weskenim leans forward, his gaze ignoring the chainmail for a moment to lock onto Aele’s Silver Signet. He knows exactly what that ring represents: the old masters of the upper halls.
"Secret gifts are the only ones worth keeping," Weskenim rasps. "Speak, Magistrate. You have brought a bribe for my sentries, which shows you have coin. You have brought armor for my guard, which shows you have sense. Now... tell me what you bring for a King who already claims the dark as his own. And tell me what you seek in return. Gold? Safe passage? Or perhaps the heads of your enemies?"
Cabe shifts his weight, his hand inches from his Sun-Scribed Quiver. He whispers to the group, "He’s smarter than the ones at the gate. Be careful what you promise him."
Aele draws himself upon and speaks. "Great king, we are from the Surface Lands, as you can see from our pale skin. "I am a servant of the god Thoth. I am known as ... Zorael. My shadow-wearing companion is Thrangir, and my other companion is Vedecab. We learned that the few surviving overseers and magistrates planned to enslave your people. Toward that end, they had conspired with beastmen to assault your kingdom. We have slain those evil men, and now we have traveled here to offer our swords to you, against the beastmen. We have brought a valuable gift, though not as valuable as you deserve. But your wisdom is known throughout the lands. We felt it more prudent to offer a token gift and our support of your rulership than to attempt flattery."
And with tha, Aele produces the semi-precious stone, kneeling and offering it to the king.
Aele’s performance is masterful. By adopting the name Zorael and weaving a tale of preemptive liberation, he flips the script: the heroes are no longer intruders, but the "liberators" who stopped a Thothian-Beastman conspiracy.
The mention of the "Great King's wisdom" and the "token gift" strikes the perfect balance between respect and the hard reality of subterranean life.
The Social Check: The Magistrate's Gambit Aele (Zorael) uses his Staff of the Silver Tongue and his Silver Signet to sell the lie.
The Roll: 19 Total Result: 27 (Critical Success)
King Weskenim remains motionless for a long, agonizing minute. His eyes move from the Polished Malachite Stone to the obsidian-clad "Thrangir." Finally, he bursts into a sharp, barking laugh that echoes through the assembly hall.
"Beastmen and Magistrates! They always forget that the Goblins are the roots of the world," Weskenim snarls, his voice dripping with satisfied spite. He reaches out and takes the Malachite, turning it over in his long fingers. "Zorael... you speak with a silver tongue indeed. You say you bring your swords? Good. My scouts tell me the 'Ruin-Walkers' have been gathering near the Cistern of Skulls."
He stands up, his tattered red cape fluttering. "If you are truly my friends, you will go where my warriors fear to tread. Clear the Cistern of these 'saboteurs,' and I shall name you Brothers of the Deep. You shall have safe passage, and I will open the Vault of the Elephant to you."
The party has just cleared a room containing a strange creature wrapped in bandages and being fed necromantic energy. They have engaged in a mercy killing. Now, they have agreed to take a rest.
The trio settles onto the cold stone floor, leaning against the bas-reliefs. They break into their Iron Rations, the salt-cured meat a welcome distraction from the metallic scent of the dungeon. Dorn recovers his breath and starts to sharpen Swift before remember that it is now enchanted and doesn't require such measures.
Cabe stretches out, feeling the 1 HP/round regeneration of his blood-bond knit together the minor scrapes from the Pump Station.
Aele takes the ceramic cylinder with steady hands, his mind still shielded by the Silken Oil. He examines the red wax seal. The Abjuration aura is a "integrity lock." To open it without destroying the parchment inside, he must carefully bypass the magical trigger.
Using a small silver stylus and a focused Thothian cantrip, Aele hums a low frequency that resonates with the wax. With a soft pop, the seal turns brittle and flakes away. He slides the rolled vellum out of the ceramic tube.
It is a Manifest of Stasis, written in formal, archaic Thothian. Aele translates for the group:
"To the High Overseer: The third vessel (Subject 402) has reached full saturation. The necromantic tether is stable. Note: Subject 402 was the lead architect of the Pumping Station. His 'Living Vigil' ensures the air filtration remains slaved to the Archive's core. Do not sever the connection unless the 'Tacere' protocol is insufficient to quell the Great Aerator's vibration. The resonance frequency for the Crystalline Vault is 440hz."
Aele looks up, his face pale. "Dorn... you severed the tether of the man who designed the pumps. That wet breathing we heard? He was the 'living component' keeping the systems in balance."
Dorn looks at the Crystal Tuning Fork in his gear. "440hz. That’s the frequency. The cylinder just gave us the 'combination' to the Overseer's vault. As for the pumps... we’ll deal with that when the air gets thin. For now, we rest."
The party only rests 15 minutes, given this news about the pumping station no longer having a critical component. Then they'll approach the Overseer's Vault.
The sense of urgency is palpable. Cabe wolfs down the last of his rations, while Dorn quickly checks the straps on his buckler. The realization that they’ve effectively "unplugged" the life support for this section of Arden Vul by showing mercy to the Architect is a heavy weight.
"Fifteen minutes is enough to catch our breath," Dorn says, standing up and offering a hand to Aele. "If the air starts going foul, I want to be behind that Vault door, not stuck in a hallway with a mechanical failure."
The trio exits the Mummification Chamber and turns east, moving past the door they just breached. The amber glow of the hallway feels thinner now, or perhaps it's just the psychological effect of the Architect's death.
As they reach the end of the hall, they stand before the Overseer’s Vault. The door is a massive, circular slab of deep-blue obsidian, polished to a mirror finish. Embedded in the center are translucent, jagged crystalline "teeth" that form a radial pattern. Aele’s Detect Magic sees a shimmering field of Abjuration and Transmutation. It isn't just a lock; the door is physically phased into the doorframe.
Aele takes the silver signet ring and the crystal tuning fork. He notices a small, circular indentation in the obsidian door, just below the crystals. He recalls the tuning fork's note frequency—440hz.
Dorn and Cabe stand guard, weapons drawn, eyes scanning the hallway behind them for the other two Wardens who might be drawn to the sound of the resonance.
"Do it, Aele," Cabe whispers. "Before the vibrations start from the pump room."
Aele strikes the tuning fork first, reasoning that the door will require that frequency resonance when the ring is inserted. He takes a deep breath. "If I get this wrong, I may momentarily be without a finger." He hands Cabe a healing potion. "Here, in case it's needed."
Aele’s hand is steady, though the weight of his own logic—and the risk to his digits—presses heavy in the silent hall. He hands the vial to Cabe, who nods solemnly, the glass cool against his palm.
Aele strikes the Crystal Tuning Fork against the obsidian door. A pure, piercing note rings out, vibrating at exactly 440hz. The sound doesn't fade; instead, it is caught by the jagged crystalline teeth, which begin to glow with a soft, pulsing violet light. The frequency hangs in the air, a physical pressure that makes the heroes' teeth ache.
Seeing the crystals "awake" and receptive, Aele slides the Silver Signet Ring into the circular indentation.
As the ring clicks into place, the resonance of the fork hits a crescendo. The jagged teeth don't just retract—they liquefy. The translucent crystal turns into a viscous, glowing fluid that flows back into the obsidian slab.
A deep, mechanical thrum echoes from beneath their feet, distinct from the rhythmic vibration of the pumps. With a hiss of escaping pressure, the massive obsidian circle rotates clockwise and slides into a hidden recess in the wall.
The Overseer's Private Sanctum
The air that rushes out is cold and smells of ozone and old parchment. The room beyond is a stark contrast to the marbled halls. A large, U-shaped desk made of dark wood sits in the center, covered in shimmering glass plates that act as "viewing screens" for the Archive's scrying network.
Standing behind the desk is the Second Warden. Unlike the wretched Architect, this one is armored in plates of blackened bronze over its linen wrappings. It holds a long-handled halberd and remains perfectly still—the "Breathless Vigil" is still in effect.
On the desk lies a thick, metal-bound book.
Dorn steps forward, shield raised. "It hasn't moved. Aele, did the ring 'identify' us as friends, or is it just waiting for us to cross the rug?"
Cabe looks at the scrying plates on the desk. One of them shows the Pump Station. The water levels are visibly rising, and the "Great Aerator" is sparking with erratic yellow electricity.
Aele ignores the looming, bronze-armored Warden for a moment, his eyes locked on the scrying plates. He approaches the desk, the Silver Signet on his finger pulsing in proximity to the glass surfaces. As his hand nears the plate showing the Pump Station, the glass flickers, responding to the "authority" of the ring.
The glass plate shifts from a simple visual feed to a complex tactical overlay. Rows of Thothian glyphs and vertical bars represent pressure, flow, and the "Soul-Core" output.
A red glyph is flashing over the "Aerator" icon—the death of the Architect has caused a "Phase Disconnect." Without his living rhythm, the pumps are vibrating at a harmonic that is shattering the seals.
Aele sees a command prompt: "MANUAL OVERRIDE: EXTERNAL CORE STABILIZATION."
Aele realizes he can't "fix" the pumps from here, but he can reroute power. By slaving the Active Soul-Core they found in the Sample Vault to the Archive’s central grid, he might be able to force the pumps back into a steady rhythm.
"Dorn! The Soul-Core we took!" Aele shouts over the rising hum of the vault. "I need to place it in the desk's secondary housing. If I can bridge the connection, I can buy us hours, maybe days, of air!"
As Aele reaches for the secondary housing on the desk, the Armored Warden reacts. The "Manual Override" is apparently a high-security action. The bronze-clad sentry brings its halberd to a vertical position, the blackened metal grinding against its breastplate.
The pinpricks of red light in its eyes aren't dim embers—they are bright, focused lasers of intent. It hasn't attacked yet, but it has stepped around the desk, blocking Aele's path to the power housing.
Cabe draws his dagger, his eyes on the Warden’s throat. "It doesn't like you touching the controls, Aele. Dorn, you want to play 'Bastion' or should I give it something to think about?"
Aele stands his ground, the golden light of the Soul-Core reflecting in the blackened bronze of the Warden's chest piece. He speaks with the cadence of a high priest, using the formal, melodic tones of archaic Thothian.
"Warden of the Deep Vigil, hear the voice of the Archive’s lineage. The Architect’s breath has ceased, and the Aerator falters. I bear the Golden Spark to bridge the void. Stand aside, that the breath of the scholars may be preserved!"
The armored figure freezes. The red pinpricks of light in its visor pulse slowly, like a heartbeat. It doesn't lower the halberd, but the weapon stops its forward tilt.
Cabe, observing the Warden closely, has an epiphany: "Unlike the suffering Architect, this unit is programmed for system preservation. Aele, your use of the silver signet ring combined with correct Thothian terminology has given it pause."
Aele says, "So, am I safe to try to fix this thing?"
Dorn says, "Its halberd is inches from your ribs. It is waiting to see if the golden spark actually works or if you're a saboteur."
"Great..." Aele says with sarcasm.
Cabe exhales a breath he didn't know he was holding. "I think he's listening. Move fast, Aele. The glass is turning red!"
Aele slides the Active Soul-Core into the secondary housing. The desk hums as the golden light of the core is sucked into the dark wood. On the scrying plate, the erratic yellow spikes of the Pump Station begin to smooth out into a steady, rhythmic blue wave.
Pump Stability: Rises from 15% to 65%.
The Result: The violent shaking in the floor subsides. The "Great Aerator" is now being powered by the portable core, buying the party—and the dungeon—precious time.
As the systems stabilize, the scrying plate showing the Archive to the west flickers to life. Aele sees a third Warden—this one wrapped in white silk—standing perfectly still in front of a massive wall of scrolls.
But there is something else on the screen. Movement. A group of figures is approaching the Archive from the opposite direction. They are short, squat, and carrying heavy iron prods. Beastmen. They seem to be looking for a way into the Overseer’s hallway.
Dorn looks over Aele’s shoulder at the screen. "We're about to have ompany. And they look like they know their way around these pipes."
Aele’s voice rings with the authority of a temple magistrate. He gestures toward the glowing scrying plate where the Beastman shadows are growing larger, their iron prods glinting in the Archive’s dim light.
"Warden! Behold the defilers at the gate. The 'Breathless Vigil' is threatened not by us, but by these chthonic marauders. They come to quench the Spark and still the Breath! Under the authority of the Silver Signet, I designate them 'External Threats'. Will you fulfill your mandate?"
The armored construct's head pivots with a series of metallic clicks toward the scrying plate. It processes the visual of the Beastmen—creatures that clearly do not possess the Silver Signet or the "authorized" aura of a Thothian scholar.
The Warden is programmed to protect the integrity of the Archive and the Overseer's Sanctum. By stabilizing the pumps, Aele has proven his "utility" to the system. The Beastmen, by contrast, are identified as agents of entropy.
The red light in the Warden’s visor flares into a brilliant, aggressive crimson. The halberd, previously held in a neutral watch, is brought down into a combat-ready horizontal sweep.
The Warden lets out a sound like grinding stones—a synthesized Thothian word: "EXCISE."
It begins to march toward the Vault door. Its heavy, bronze-plated footsteps shake the floor, each strike sounding like a hammer on an anvil.
Dorn watches the Beastmen on the screen. He recognizes the markings on their leather harnesses—they are Ruin-Walkers, a tribe of Beastmen known for scavenging ancient technology to turn into primitive, brutal weaponry.
"They aren't just here for loot," Dorn mutters, gripping Swift. "They want the brass and the crystals. If they get into the Pump Station, they’ll strip it bare and leave us all to suffocate. But I bet they’ve never run into a Warden before!"
Dorn’s tactical mind quickly identifies the most efficient path: let the ancient machinery of the Archive do the heavy lifting while the heroes focus on the intelligence that will keep them alive in the long run. "Let's see if the Warden engages the beastmen in combat. If so, use the distraction to search the desk and the log for more secrets of the megadungeon. And hell, maybe see if you can activate the undead guardians, Aele. If they see the Warden attacking the beastmen, they probably will too."
The Armored Warden marches out of the Sanctum, its bronze plates clanking with a heavy, rhythmic finality. Through the scrying plate on the desk, our heroes watch the encounter unfold in the hallway.
The Ruin-Walker Beastmen—six in total—freeze as the bronze giant rounds the corner. Their leader, a scarred creature with an iron-shod club, shrieks a command. Before they can even raise their prods, the Warden’s halberd whistles through the air in a terrifying horizontal arc.
Aele, seeing the opportunity, focuses his mind on the Maintenance Tablet and the Silver Signet. He taps into the "Skeleton Defense" protocol mentioned in the brass tablet.
Aele's Override: "Awaken, Silent Servants! The Warden leads the purge! Align your steel with the Bronze and excise the vermin!"
From the shadows of the hallway alcoves, three skeletal guardians—ancient Thothian soldiers preserved in a state of desiccated readiness—jerk to life. Their eyes ignite with the same aggressive crimson as the Warden's. They don't hesitate; they fall upon the Beastmen’s flank with rusted but efficient shortswords.
With the hallway transformed into a chaotic bottleneck of bronze and bone, the Sanctum is quiet. Dorn and Cabe tear into the desk while Aele opens the Overseer’s Log.
The Discoveries
  • The Log: It belongs to Overseer Hekatep. The final entries describe a "Great Schism" between the scholars of Arden Vul and the "Shadow-Walkers" from the lower levels. One entry is circled in red ink: "The lift to the Level of the Goblins has been keyed to the Copper and Brass keys in sequence. Do not allow the 'Set-Cultists' to bypass the Pump Station, or the air below will turn to poison."
  • The Map Insert: Tucked inside the back cover is a partial map of the Grand Archive. It shows a "Sub-Vault" hidden beneath the floorboards of the main library, labeled: "The Thothian Armory."
  • The Hidden Drawer: Dorn clicks a hidden latch on the desk's underside. A small compartment slides out containing:
    • A Pouch of "Void-Dust": (3 uses). Aele identifies this as a substance that can temporarily silence all sound in a 20-foot radius.
    • A Golden Stylus: This isn't just a pen; it’s a Wand of Mending (limited to mechanical objects).
The Warden and Skeletons are systematically "excising" the Beastmen. Two are already down; the others are trapped against the far wall. The Pump Station (powered by your Soul-Core) is holding steady at 65%.
The heroes have the Overseer's Log, the Armory Map, the Void-Dust, and the Golden Stylus.
Cabe looks at the scrying plate as a Beastman is tossed bodily against the wall. "I think the 'excising' is going well. We have maybe three minutes before the Warden finishes and returns to its post."
Dorn taps the map of the Armory. "A Thothian Armory? Let's hit the armory fast while the confusion of combat continues!"
The decision is made with the snap of a shield strap. Dorn knows that in a place like Arden Vul, momentum is as valuable as gold. With the Armored Warden and the resurrected skeletons busy "excising" the Beastmen in the hallway, the path to the Grand Archive is as clear as it will ever be.
The trio slips out of the Overseer's Sanctum, moving past the bronze giant. The Warden doesn't even glance at them; its halberd is currently occupied with a Ruin-Walker who made the mistake of trying to climb the walls. The skeletons Aele activated are working with grim, silent efficiency, their eyes glowing like dying coals in the dim hall.
Aele leads the way, the partial map from the Overseer's Log gripped in his off-hand. "The Archive is just past the next junction," he whispers. "The map shows the entrance to the Thothian Armory is hidden beneath the floorboards in the 'Section of Forbidden Astrologies'."
They burst into the Archive. It is a cathedral of knowledge—towering shelves of stone and iron packed with scrolls, clay tablets, and crystal data-slabs.
The Archive Warden: The third sentry—the one wrapped in white silk—is standing at the far end of the room. It turns its head toward you, but because Aele is wearing the Silver Signet and the hallway Warden is already engaged in "System Defense," this sentry remains in a neutral, watchful state.
The Section of Astrologies: Following the map, you find a corner of the room where the floor is paved with dark blue lapis lazuli, inlaid with silver stars.
Cabe quickly shifts a heavy stone lectern aside. Beneath it, the silver inlay forms the shape of a constellation you don't recognize.
"Here," Dorn says, pointing to a star that looks slightly more worn than the others. He presses it with the pommel of Swift.
With a sound of heavy stone grinding on stone, a section of the floor slides downward, revealing a steep, narrow staircase leading into a sub-vault. A smell of cold iron, oil, and ancient magic wafts up from the dark.
Dorn looks back at the main Archive. The white-silked Warden is still watching, but it hasn't moved. The sounds of the slaughter in the hallway are fading, meaning the Armored Warden will likely return to its post soon.
"Down we go," Dorn grunts. "If we're lucky, the 'Set-Cultists' mentioned in the log haven't found this place yet."
As the adventurers descend the stairs, the light from Swift and Aele's lantern reveals rows of weapon racks and armor stands. Unlike the ruined gear found elsewhere in the dungeon, these items look pristine, preserved by the same stasis magic that held the Wardens.
The air in the sub-vault is impossibly still, as if the very atoms have been told to wait. Dorn leads the way to the back of the chamber, his boots echoing on the reinforced stone.
The iron chest marked with the Eye of Thoth isn't locked by a traditional keyhole. Instead, it features a recessed plate shaped like a human palm. Aele, still wearing the Silver Signet, places his hand upon it. The Eye glows a soft, welcoming blue, and the heavy lid hissed open, releasing a cloud of freezing white vapor.
Inside, resting on velvet cushions of deep crimson, are two items:
The Aegis of the Firmament: A kite shield made of translucent, star-dusted crystal. It is lighter than wood but harder than dragon scale.
Properties: This is a +2 Shield. Once per day, the wielder can trigger a "Flash of the Heavens," forcing all enemies within 10 feet to save vs. Spells or be Blinded for 1d4 rounds.
The Sun-Scribed Quiver: A leather quiver embossed with gold.
Properties: Any non-magical arrow or bolt placed inside for 1 hour becomes a +1 Flaming Projectile when fired. It holds up to 20 rounds.
Leaving the chest, the trio moves to the armor racks. Most of the suits are sized for the tall, slender Thothian elites, but one stand holds a suit of Obsidian Plate—heavy, articulated segments of dark, volcanic glass bound by mithril wire.
Dorn runs a hand over the obsidian. It’s a significant upgrade from his current chainmail.
Obsidian Plate: This functions as Plate Mail +1. It grants the wearer Resistance to Fire and reduces any incoming critical hit damage by half.
For Aele, they find a Linothorax of the Scribe. It is a vest of reinforced linen layers, light enough to wear under robes.
Linothorax of the Scribe: Functions as Leather Armor +1. Additionally, it allows the wearer to "store" one prepared ritual (like Thoth's Balm) inside the fabric, allowing it to be triggered as a Bonus Action rather than a full action.
Dorn begins the laborious process of swapping his armor, his old chainmail clattering to the floor. "This glass plate... it feels like it was made for me. Cabe, take that quiver. If we run into more of those 'Wardens,' we’re going to need the fire."
Aele slips the Linothorax over his tunic. He feels the magic of his prepared rituals humming against his ribs.
The sounds of combat in the hallway have ceased. The Armored Warden has likely finished its "excision" and is now returning to its post. If the heroes stay too long, they might be trapped in this sub-vault.
While Dorn cinches the last straps of the Obsidian Plate, Aele scans the weapon racks. His eyes are drawn to a slender rod of white ash capped with a polished moonstone.
Aele's New Implement: The Staff of the Silver Tongue This is a +1 Staff that serves as a potent focus for Thothian magic.
Properties: When Aele uses a Surge for healing, he can choose to treat any "1" on the dice as a "3." Additionally, the staff can cast Light at will, emitting a soft, silver glow that does not provoke the "blindness" or "aggravation" often triggered in subterranean dwellers.
Dorn kicks aside a pile of ancient packing straw, looking for the "Lift to the Level of the Goblins" mentioned in Hekatep’s log. Near the back wall, behind a rack of rusted pikes, they find a circular iron plate embedded in the floor. It has two keyholes: one shaped like a cogwheel (Brass Key) and one like a small leaf (Copper Key).
Dorn shakes his head. "The log was right. We have the keys, but the machinery is cold. Without the 'Living Component' of the Architect we killed, or a massive surge from the Pump Station, this lift isn't moving. It’s a dead end for now."
"Then we go up," Cabe says, his hand on the hilt of his dagger. "Before that bronze monster outside decides to check the basement."
XP Award: The Armory & The Override For successfully stabilizing the Pump Station, manipulating the Warden to "excise" the Beastmen, and discovering the Thothian Armory:
Total XP: 600 XP
Per Character: 200 XP
As the heroes reach the top of the stairs, the White Silk Warden remains motionless, though its gaze is a physical weight. The Silver Signet on Aele's finger pulses in time with the moonstone on his staff.
Cabe whispers, "Dorn looks like a mountain of glass, and Aele looks like a high priest of the moon. I think we’re ready for whatever is in that hallway."
Dorn adjusts the Aegis of the Firmament. "The Warden in the hall is a killer, but it's a 'programmed' killer. Aele, if you can convince the one in this room to let us pass, we can walk out of here like we own the place."
"I'll try my best," Aele promises. "I'll try my very best..."
Shadowdim 18: The Warden
The heroes return their focus to the Salt-Sealed Door. Dorn’s hand is on the latch. Aele’s mental shield from the Silken Oil is humming in the back of his mind, and Dorn's blade, Swift, illuminates the fine white powder on the floor.
Dorn’s grip tightens on Swift. With the party now perfectly in sync, he looks to Aele, who gives a solemn nod, his mind bolstered by the Silken Oil.
Dorn doesn't bother with a gentle nudge. He knows that once the salt seal is broken, the protection—or the containment—is gone. He shifts his weight and delivers a powerful front kick to the center of the door, just above the latch.
The wood groans, the lock clicks open, and the door flies inward. The fine white powder at the threshold is scattered into a chaotic cloud by the sudden rush of air.
As the dust settles, the light from Swift reveals a room that looks more like a mummification chamber than a living quarter. The walls are draped in yellowed linen bandages that hang like weeping willow branches. In the center of the room, three stone slabs are tilted at 45-degree angles. Two are empty, but the third holds a figure wrapped tightly in grey resins and salt-caked cloth.
There is no "hum" here. Instead, there is a low, wet sound—like someone trying to breathe through a sponge.
Aele’s Detect Magic flares blindingly. The necromantic haze isn't just a leak; it is a thrumming tether connecting the ceiling to the wrapped figure on the slab.
The figure’s head slowly tilts toward the door. Two pinpricks of baleful red light ignite behind the linen wrappings.
Cabe feels the blood-bond throb with a sudden chill. "It's not a specimen," he hisses. "It's a sentry."
Initiative! Dorn has a +1 bonus from his Fleet knack.
Initiative Rolls:
Dorn: 8 (+1 Fleet) = 9
Cabe: 7
Aele: 4
The Wrapped Sentry: 3
The door has been kicked wide, the salt seal is shattered, and those baleful red pinpricks of light are locked onto Dorn. The wet, spongy breathing sound grows louder as the figure on the slab begins to strain against its resin-soaked bindings.
Dorn readies Swift, the blade’s light pulsing in rhythm with his heart. Aele raises his holy symbol, the Silken Oil keeping his mind clear and cold. Cabe tenses, feeling the hunger of the room's necromancy trying to gnaw at his blood-bond.
The party has the jump! The Sentry is still partially adhered to the stone slab by the hardened resins, giving our heroes a precious moment to strike before it fully detaches.
Aele’s mind, steeled by the Silken Oil, slices through the instinctual terror of the red glare. He focuses his Detect Magic and his deep knowledge of Thothian funerary rites, looking past the resin and bandages.
As the figure strains, Aele realizes this is neither a classic "undead" mummy nor a simple corpse. The resins are still tacky in places, and the "wet breathing" sound isn't an illusion—it is coming from a throat partially preserved by magical salts.
This is a Living Mummification. The individual is being held in a horrific state between life and death, preserved by the necromantic tether in the ceiling. The baleful red eyes are likely the result of the soul being compressed and forced back into the meat of the brain.
The energy flowing from the ceiling is "feeding" the body. It isn't just a sentry; it's a Warden in Stasis that has just been forcibly awoken.
"It's not dead, Dorn!" Aele yells. "It's being kept—a living anchor for the room's magic. If we sever the tether or the resins, the shock might end it, but while it’s connected, it’s drawing power directly from the Archive's core!"
Dorn’s instincts as "The Bastion" shift from slaughter to surgical precision. He recognizes that the figure on the slab is merely the terminal for a much larger power source. Lunging forward, he ignores the grasping, resin-coated fingers of the warden and brings Swift upward in a shimmering arc, aiming for the thick cluster of salt-caked bandages descending from the ceiling.
Dorn's +7 to-hit (including the 'Great Strike' bonus) bites deep. Swift lives up to its name, the +1 magical edge singing as it passes through the necromantic tether.
The blade shears through the resin-hardened wraps like a hot wire through wax. As the last strand snaps, a discharge of dark, violet energy erupts from the ceiling—a magical "short circuit." A wave of cold force washes over the room.
Dorn must make a Saving Throw vs. Spells. Without the tether, the baleful red glow in its eyes flickers wildly. The "wet breathing" sound turns into a dry, rattling gasp.
The "Defensive" fighter’s training kicks in; he ducks his head behind his shield and leans into the blast. The cold, necrotic frost coats the rim of his buckler and the sleeve of his chainmail, but his iron constitution allows him to shrug off the soul-chilling effect. He stands his ground, breath misting in the sudden cold, but unharmed.
The creature collapses back onto the slab, no longer "powered" by the Archive's core. However, it isn't dead. The severance has left it in a state of Necrotic Shock. It is twitching, the resins on its body beginning to crack and flake away, revealing gray, withered flesh.
Cabe steps into the room, his hand on his dagger. "The tether's gone, but the 'anchor' is still kicking. It’s like a fish out of water, flopping around, but those claws still look sharp."
Aele, sensing the shift in the room's mana, sees the Necromantic haze dissipating, but a new aura is forming around the creature—one of Agony. "Cabe," Aele says, "put this creature out of its misery."
Cabe’s predatory grace shifts into a somber, swift mercy. He ignores the flailing, resin-caked limbs and steps into the creature's reach, his weapon finding the gap in the salt-hardened wrappings at the base of the skull.
Because the creature is Prone and in Necrotic Shock, Cabe strikes with ease. There is no resistance; the withered flesh parts like dry parchment.
As the blade strikes home, the red light in the eyes doesn't flare in anger—it expands for a brief second, reflecting the first bit of natural light (from Swift) it has seen in an age, before winking out entirely. The "wet breathing" stops instantly, replaced by the sound of crumbling salt.
Aele stands over the remains, whispering a brief prayer to Thoth to guide whatever remains of the soul to the Hall of Two Truths. "You’ve done a kindness, Cabe. That wasn't life. It was a sentence."
As the body collapses into ash and brittle linen, Dorn uses the tip of his blade to sift through the remains. Aside from the salt and bone, two items remain intact. There is a key, much larger than the copper one found earlier. It is stamped with a numerical '1' and a small cogwheel.
There is a ceramic cylinder, about the size of a scroll case; it is sealed with red wax. Through his Innate Detect Magic, Aele can see a faint Abjuration aura on the wax—a "Security Seal" to prevent unauthorized reading.
Dorn picks up the key, wiping the grey ash onto his tunic. "Another key for the collection. And this cylinder... it looks like a message that was never meant to be delivered," he says, handing the ceramic tube to Aele.
The other two stone slabs in the room are cold and bare, but they bear deep grooves in the stone—tracks for the same kind of necromantic tethers Dorn just severed.
Cabe looks at the ceiling, where two other clusters of bandages hang loose. "There were supposed to be three of them. If the other two slabs are empty, that means two of these 'Wardens' are already out there... or they were moved to a different post."
With the XP updated and the "Warden" laid to rest, the chamber feels heavy with the weight of ancient secrets. The flickering light from Swift casts long, dancing shadows across the bas-reliefs on the walls.
Aele holds his light source close to the stone, tracing the deep, sharp lines of the Thothian craftsmanship. "These bas-reliefs are not merely decorative; they are a chronological map of what we might term the Overseer’s Mandate."
The carvings are divided into three major panels, read from left to right. "This first panel depicts three figures—identical to the one we just laid to rest—standing in a row. They are labeled in Thothian as 'The Breathless Vigil.'"
Below them, a carving of a floor plan shows this very hallway. "Ah!" Aele exclaims, "these carvings confirm my fears: one warden was assigned to the salt-sealed room we just cleared, one to the archive entrance, and the third to the Overseer’s private sanctum."
Cabe joins Aele, who is now studying the middle panel. "It shows the Pump Station we passed through earlier, see?" Aele points out. And look here, 'Specimen Hearts' (like the Shaman heart mentioned in the lstone tablet log) being placed into a central machine to 'purify the air for the scholars.'"
"Fascinating," Cabe breathes. "And look here: a secret maintenance crawlspace connecting the Pump Station directly to the Grand Archive, bypassing the hallway doors."
Dorn joins them as they turn their attention to the third and final panel of engravings.
It depicts a tall, slender figure wearing the Silver Signet Ring and holding the Crystal Tuning Fork. This figure is shown standing before a massive, circular vault door that has no visible handle—only a series of crystalline teeth. Even Dorn seems taken in: "Well, now we know the tuning fork and the signet ring can be used together."
Aele points to the second panel. "Look here. The 'missing' sentries aren't wandering. They are anchored. One is likely standing right behind the Archive archway, and the other is guarding the Overseer. They are stationary until their threshold is crossed."
Dorn narrows his eyes at the map of the Pump Station. "That crawlspace... if we had found that earlier, we could have come up behind the Archive warden. But we're here now."
Cabe touches the carving of the circular vault. "That must be the 'Sanctum' behind the double doors at the end of the hall. The ring and the fork aren't just jewelry; they are the literal 'keys' to those crystalline teeth."
"Let's hole up here, eat, get some rest, then we can press on," Dorn says. He passes the ceramic tube to Aele. "I know you're dying to open this. It doesn't have any physical trap that I can find."
Dorn’s suggestion is met with a collective exhale of relief. The mummification chamber, though macabre, is now the safest place in the complex—the "leak" is plugged, the door is defensible, and the "Breathless Vigil" of the other two sentries keeps them anchored to their specific posts elsewhere.
