Shadowdim 25: A Closeted Discussion

- Posted in The Shadowdim by

Our heroes have attained Level 5. Let's process the particulars and bask in them:

Hero Die Type Roll #1 Roll #2 Higher Con Bonus HP Gained New Max HP
Dorn d10 10 3 10 +4 14 60
Aele d8 7 2 7 +4 11 52
Cabe d8 8 5 8 +4 12 44

Aele clears a space on the ink-stained stone table, carefully laying out the Cylinders of the First Dynasty. Thistle provides a small, heated wire to melt the ancient wax seals without damaging the clay underneath. As Aele works, a preternatural focus settles over the group—the weight of their new Level 5 capabilities grounding them for the confrontation ahead.

As Aele rolls the first cylinder across a tray of fine sand, the architectural impressions of the Hall of Records appear. Thistle gasps, pointing a trembling, ink-stained finger at a series of hidden lines running beneath the main archive floor.

"There," Thistle whispers. "The Ventilation Scuppers. They were designed to keep the papyrus dry by drawing air up from the pump station. They emerge directly behind the pedestals in the High Archive."

Following this "Shadow-Path" will allow the party to enter the Hall of Records from behind the massive stone pedestals, completely bypassing the main doors where The Gilded are likely stationed.

"You will have the element of surprise. You can see them before they see you!" says Thistle, the fearful scribe.

Aele says, "Slow down, Thistle. We don't know who this enemy is that you're describing. For that matter, we have no proof that you aren't one of them, here to lure us into an ambush. Now, start from the beginning. Tell us who you are, where you come from, what you're doing in Arden Vul, and who these people are you're so keen for us to attack."

Thistle freezes, his hand still hovering over the iron grate. The adrenaline of the discovery evaporates, replaced by the sudden, cold realization that he is trapped in a small room with three seasoned killers who don't entirely trust him.

He pulls his hands back, palms open, and sinks onto a stool, looking every bit the weary, ink-stained scribe he claims to be.

Thistle’s Testimony "You’re right to ask, Magistrate," he says, his voice shaky but sincere. "In Arden Vul, a smile is often just a whetstone for a dagger."

"Like I told me, my name is Thistle. I am—or was—a junior archivist for the Order of the Silent Scroll. We are a non-political sect dedicated to cataloging the 'Dead History' of the First Dynasty. We aren't warriors; we're bookworms who enjoy the cool air of the lower levels."

"I was part of a sanctioned expedition from the Surface to recover the Cylinders of the First Dynasty. We’ve been living in this Refectory for three weeks, eating dried mushrooms and drinking filtered cistern water. But four days ago, everything changed."

"The Gilded are a mercenary company out of Gosterwick. They call themselves The Gilded because they tip their spears in fool's gold to mock the poor. They are led by Kaelen Voss, a man who was once a Captain of the Guard before he was exiled for 'excessive zeal.' He's a professional, Magistrate. He doesn't want the history; he wants the Imperial Tithe-Maps rumored to be behind the Weight of Ma'at seal. He thinks they'll lead him to a vault of First Dynasty gold."

"When Voss arrived, he didn't negotiate. He killed my Master, Archivist Oron, and enslaved the rest of my circle to help him translate the seals. I only escaped because I was in the latrine when they breached the door. I’ve been hiding here, listening to them through the vents, waiting for someone—anyone—who wasn't wearing a Gilded tabard to show up."

Thistle reaches into his tunic and pulls out a small, dented bronze signet ring—the mark of the Silent Scroll archivist—and slides it across the table toward Aele.

"I'm not asking you to attack them for me," Thistle says, looking Aele in the eye. "I'm asking you to attack them because if Voss gets those maps, he’ll burn this library to the ground to ensure no one else can follow him. I want my friends back. And I want to go home."

Dorn shifts his weight, his hand resting on the pommel of Swift. He looks at Aele, waiting for the Magistrate's judgment. The scribe's story fits the "Gosterwick" connection you've seen in the ledgers you recovered earlier, but the megadungeon is famous for its illusions.

Aele closes his eyes, fingers tracing the cool surface of the Heart-Seed Scarab as he lets his consciousness drift into the communal memory of his order. Behind his eyelids, he sees the great Library of Archontos and the sprawling, ink-stained lineages of those who serve the God of Wisdom.

The Sense Motive Result Aele opens his eyes. The ambient amber light of the scarab pulses with a steady, rhythmic warmth—a sign of truth and resonance.

Aele recalls that this is indeed a legitimate, albeit minor, monastic circle. They are known as the "Dust-Eaters" among higher-ranking Thothian clergy because they specialize in the mundane, non-magical records that others find tedious—tax receipts, architectural drafts, and trade ledgers. They are exactly the kind of people who would be living in a basement refectory to study cylinders.

The name Kaelen Voss strikes a chord of discord. Aele remembers hearing of a disgraced Captain of the Silver Shields in Gosterwick who was obsessed with the idea that the "Old Empire" hid its true wealth not in gold, but in the land-deeds and tithe-maps of the surrounding valleys.

Aele's Verdict: "He is telling the truth, Dorn. The 'Silent Scroll' are harmless pedants, and Voss is exactly the kind of vulture who would pick their bones for a scrap of 'legal' gold. Thistle is no warrior—he is a survivor."

"Exactly!" Thistle says, with feeling.

The Order of the Silent Scroll: Aele recalls that this is indeed a legitimate, albeit minor, monastic circle.

The Gosterwick Connection: The name Kaelen Voss strikes a chord of discord.

Dorn’s face is a mask of cold iron, his proximity so intense that Thistle can likely see his own terrified reflection in the warrior's dark eyes. The scribe swallows hard, his Adam's apple bobbing against his ink-stained collar.

"Two," Dorn continues, his voice a low, gravelly promise. "You keep your mouth shut, you stay behind Cabe, and you point out anything that looks like a trap before it takes a limb off. If we survive, you get your library back. If you lie... well, Swift hasn't tasted scribe blood yet today."

Thistle nods so vigorously his spectacles nearly slide off his nose. "I—I understand! I’ll be your shadow! I know every pressure plate in the North Wing! Just... just please, keep that sword away from me."

"One last condition," Aele says. "You join us as my research assistant, new acolyte of Thoth, and general dogsbody. Are we agreed?" Aele glances at Dorn to see if the big man is okay with this. When he sees dark amusement in the fighter's eyes, he says, "You become the fourth member of the Brothers of the Deep."

Thistle’s eyes go wide, his mouth opening and closing like a landed fish. He looks at the "Brothers"—the iron-clad engine of death that is Dorn, the grim, regenerating scout Cabe, and finally Aele, who radiates the terrifying authority of a high priest of the god he has spent his life studying from afar.

"Research assistant?" Thistle squeaks. "I... I’ve spent my life cataloging tax yields on barley. I'm a fourth Brother?" He looks at his ink-stained, trembling hands, then stands a little straighter, adjusted his spectacles, and gives a sharp, jerky nod. "Agreed, Magistrate. I suppose the 'Deep' is as good a place as any for a scribe to find his spine. Lead the way... Master Aele."

Dorn’s "dark amusement" manifests as a low, dry chuckle that sounds like grinding stones. He claps a heavy, gauntleted hand on Thistle’s shoulder—nearly buckling the poor man's knees—and nudges him toward the iron grate.

Before launching the surprise attack against The Gilded, Aele activates the benefits of 'Thoth's Comfort'. As Dorn draws himself up, shield and sword ready, Aele squeeze's Thistle's shoulder. "Stay behind me, lad." Then, as they launch their surprise attack, Aele uses his magical armor to trigger 'Thoth's Champion', targeting Dorn with its effects.

The moment of the ambush has arrived. As Aele whispers the final, resonant syllables of the Thothian rites, the air in the dark crawlspace thickens with divine energy. A shimmering, translucent gold veil wraps around the party—Thoth’s Comfort—while a surge of aggressive, azure light pours from Aele’s focus into Dorn, crowning him as Thoth’s Champion.

Dorn, now an avatar of martial perfection, doesn't just kick the floorboards; he erupts through them. Cedar splinters like glass under his boots as he vaults into the High Archive, the glowing edge of Swift leading the way.

The Gilded mercenaries are caught in a state of utter disarray. One is mid-swing with a heavy mallet; another is wiping sweat from his brow. Kaelen Voss is the only one who reacts with professional speed, his hand flying to his gold-filigreed maul, but even he is too slow to stop the initial onslaught.

Dorn is a thundering engine of divine wrath. The azure light of Thoth’s Champion flaring around his plate armor makes him appear twice his actual size in the flickering torchlight of the Archive.

Dorn targets the nearest mercenary, a veteran in stained chainmail who is currently frozen with a heavy resonance-mallet mid-air.

Attack Roll: Dorn swings Swift with a total +15 to hit
(+12 base, +1 magical, +2 Champion).
The Strike: The roll is a 19 (Total 34), a devastating
blow that bypasses the mercenary's guard entirely.
Damage: Swift bites deep into the mercenary's
shoulder and chest.
Damage: 1d8 + 10 (Base + Str + Great Strike + Swift)
Result: 16 damage.

The mercenary isn't dead, but he is staggered, his collarbone shattered and his mail shredded. Blood sprays across the ancient stone floor.

True to his intent, Dorn doesn't pause to deliver the killing blow. He trusts in the "Brothers" to sweep up the debris. He steps over the wounded man, his boots crunching on cedar splinters and stone dust, and closes the gap with Kaelen Voss.

"Voss!" Dorn’s voice booms, amplified by the high ceilings of the Archive. "The tithe-maps belong to the god of wisdom, not a gold-crazed exile!"

With the first mercenary reeling and Dorn engaging the boss, the rest of the Brothers act in the surprise round:

Cabe Aveda: Seeing the wounded mercenary staggered by Dorn, Cabe releases a "Red Frenzy" arrow. With a +9 to hit, the arrow strikes the mercenary in the throat. The man collapses silently.

Aele Truemas: Aele steps up, his hand glowing with white-hot energy. He sees the two crossbowmen near the door raising their weapons. Instead of the wounded man, Aele directs a Surge at the nearest archer to prevent a counter-volley.Radiant Damage: 1d6 + 5. Aele rolls a 4 (Total 9 damage). The archer is scorched by Thoth’s light, his leather jerkin smoking.

Current Tactical State (End of Surprise Round)

Enemy Status Notes
Merc 1 Deceased Slain by Dorn/Cabe
Merc 2 Uninjured Armed: polearm; flanking Voss
Archer 1 Wounded (-9 HP)|Scorched by Aele; reeling
Archer 2 Uninjured aiming at the floor-hole
Kaelen Voss Challenged Dorn in his face; Voss enraged

Aele recognizes the catastrophic frequency of the chime. Leaving the Seal to detonate would be a failure of his duty to Thoth and a death sentence for the Brothers.

Aele dashes across the dusty floor, his linothorax rustling. He ignores the whistling of a crossbow bolt that streaks past his ear, focusing entirely on the shuddering tripod.

Aele places his hand near the vibrating metal, his Heart-Seed Scarab pulsing with a steady, calming amber light. He seeks the "harmonic key"—the specific sequence to dampen the resonance.

Roll: Since this relates to Thothian seals and the Hall of Records, Aele has Advantage.

Aele succeeds; he identifies the tuning fork stabilizer. Instead of smashing it, he realizes he must counter-rotate the lead weight at the base to throw the frequency out of alignment with the Seal’s ward.

Aele’s fingers, steady despite the chaos, grip the hot lead weights. With a sharp, practiced twist, he forces the mechanism to grind against itself. The high-pitched whine drops into a low, mournful groan. The violet light in the Weight of Ma'at seal stops pulsing aggressively and settles into a dim, watchful glow.

The Ma'at Feedback Loop has been averted, for now. The chisel is disabled.

While Aele neutralizes the hazard, the rest of the room continues violence.

Kaelen Voss roars in frustration as the machine goes silent. "Pest! I'll have your hands for that!" He swings his gold-filigreed maul at Dorn.

Voss vs. Dorn: The maul whistles through the air. Because Dorn is Thoth's Champion, his AC is a staggering 28. The maul slams into Dorn's shield with a bone-shaking thud, but the blue aura of the ritual absorbs the kinetic force. Dorn doesn't give an inch.

  • Archer 1 (Wounded): Seeing Aele at the machine, he drops his crossbow and draws a shortsword, lunging at the priest.
  • Mercenary 2 (Polearm): Moves to flank Dorn, trying to find a gap in his Champion-buffed defense.

Cabe sees the archer charging Aele. He uses his Constrict Their Heart ability on the wounded archer (Free Action, since Aele injured him last round). Damage: 1d4 necrotic damage. The archer stumbles, clutching his chest as his heart skips a beat.

Current Tactical State (End of Round 1)

Hero Status Hp AAC
Dorn Champion (4/5 rnds) 60/60 28
Aele Chisel disabled 52/52 19
Cabe Red Frenzy (active) 49/49 17
Thistle Hiding -- --

Aele doesn't even look up from the deactivated machine as the archer stumbles toward him. He simply extends his left hand, the Heart-Seed Scarab pulsing with a blinding, incandescent light that mirrors the righteous fury of Thoth.

Surge Usage: Aele spends one of his 5 daily surges.
The Roll: He generates a pool of 1d6 + 5 points.
Knack Synergy: Because of Adept and Savant, Aele
re-rolls any results of 1 or 2.
Result: Aele rolls a 6. Total damage: 11 Radiant Damage.

The blast is a focused beam of solar heat. It strikes the wounded archer square in the chest, cauterizing the air and punching through his leather armor. The man doesn't even have time to scream; he is thrown backward five feet, his body hitting the stone floor with a heavy thud, smoke curling from his blackened jerkin.

The Archer is dead.

As the archer falls, the rest of the room remains a cyclone of violence.

Dorn is currently a pillar of blue light, holding back both Kaelen Voss and the polearm-wielding mercenary. Dorn lashes out with Swift. With his Champion bonus (+15 to hit), he easily finds a gap in the polearm-man’s defense, carving a deep furrow across the man's ribs for 14 damage. The mercenary stays on his feet, but he’s breathing hard and bleeding out.

Voss is a veteran. Seeing Aele's magic and Dorn's resilience, he changes tactics. "Kill the priest!" he roars, though he is currently pinned by Dorn's shield. He swings his maul in a wide, horizontal arc meant to force Dorn back so the others can reach Aele. The maul clangs against Dorn's shield (AC 28). The impact is immense, but the Champion aura holds.

Cabe, seeing the archer fall near Aele, doesn't waste the opportunity. He darts forward toward the fresh corpse. Suck Their Marrow: Since Cabe is at his Max HP (49), he touches the fallen archer. Result: He gains 1d4 Temporary HP. He rolls a 3. Current HP: 49 + 3 Temp HP.

Current Tactical State (End of Round 2)

Hero Status Resources
Dorn Champion (3/5 rnds) HP 60/60
Aele Standing over chisel HP 52/52 (Surges 4/5)
Cabe Red Frenzy HP 49/49 (+3 temp)
Thistle Covered Safe behind a pillar

The Enemy:

  • Kaelen Voss: Uninjured, engaged with Dorn.
  • Mercenary 2 (Polearm): Wounded (-14 HP), flanking Dorn.
  • Archer 2: Uninjured, standing by the door, currently reloading his crossbow.

Aele turns his gaze from the smoldering archer to the mercenary pressuring Dorn's flank. The Thothian priest’s face is cold, his eyes reflecting the divine light of the archive. He raises the Heart-Seed Scarab, and a second lance of solar fury erases the mercenary's shadow.

Aele spends his 3rd daily surge (2 remaining).
The Roll: 1d6 + 5
Knack Synergy (Adept/Savant): Aele rolls a 2,
which triggers a re-roll. The new roll is a 5.
Result: 10 Radiant Damage. The blast catches
the polearm-man in his wounded side.

Already weakened by Dorn's steel, the mercenary's knees buckle as the radiant energy bypasses his armor entirely. He collapses into a heap of scorched chainmail and cooling blood. Mercenary 2 is down.

With his support gone, Kaelen Voss looks less like a conquering warlord and more like a cornered animal. However, a cornered animal with a gold-filigreed maul is still a lethal threat.

With the flank clear, Dorn leans into his shield and delivers a brutal riposte against Voss.

Attack: Dorn’s +15 to hit vs. Voss’s Plate Armor.
The Strike: A roll of 16 (Total 31). Swift bites into
Voss’s thigh, sliding through a gap in the gold-washed
greaves.
Damage: 1d8 + 10 = 15 damage.

Voss grunts, a spray of red dotting his ornate armor. He is finally bleeding.

The final archer at the door, seeing his entire squad incinerated or cut down, panics. Instead of aiming at the armored Dorn, he fires a bolt at the most obvious threat: Aele.

Attack vs. Aele: The bolt flies true.

Result: The archer rolls a 17. Against Aele's AAC 19 (Base + Defensive x2 + Comfort), the bolt narrowly misses, skipping off the stone pillar Aele is using for partial cover.

Cabe doesn't let the archer reload. He uses Constrict Their Heart on the lone survivor.

Damage: 3 necrotic damage. The archer gasps, dropping his crossbow as he clutches his chest.

Current Tactical State (End of Round 3)

Character Status Health/Resources
Dorn Champion (2/5 rnds) 60/60 HP
Aele standing his ground 52/52 HP (Surges: 2/5)
Cabe Red Frenzy 49/49 HP (+3 Temp)
Voss Wounded down 15 HP
Archer #2 heart-struck down 3 more hp/drops x-bow

"Enough!" Voss bellows, his voice cracking. He looks at the silent Weight of Ma'at seal, then at the three "Brothers" standing over the corpses of his men. He shifts his grip on his maul, preparing a desperate, heavy-swinging "Shieldbreaker" maneuver.

Aele steps forward, his boots crunching on the cedar splinters of the floorboards. He ignores the panicked archer at the door, fixing his gaze entirely on the man who dared to bring a hammer to a house of wisdom. The Heart-Seed Scarab pulses with an intensity that matches the flaring blue aura of the Thoth’s Champion ritual surrounding Dorn.

Aele spends his 4th daily surge (1 remaining).
The Roll: He generates a pool of 1d6 + 5 points.
Knack Synergy (Adept/Savant): Aele rolls a 1, which is
immediately re-rolled. The new result is a 6.
Result: 11 Radiant Damage.

A pillar of blinding white light erupts from the scarab, slamming into Voss’s gold-tinted breastplate. The metal doesn't melt, but it conducts the divine heat directly into the mercenary's chest. Voss's roar of defiance turns into a choked gasp as the light scours the arrogance from his face.

Seeing Voss staggered and smoking from Aele’s blast, Dorn seizes the opening. His movement is a blur—speed combined with the raw power of a 5th-level Fighter.

Attack: Dorn swings Swift with his final rounds of Champion (+15 to hit).
The Strike: A roll of 18 (Total 33).
Damage: 1d8 + 10 = 17 damage.

Swift catches Voss under the chin, the magical blade sliding upward through the soft mail of the gorget. The leader of the Gilded is lifted off his feet for a fraction of a second before collapsing into a heavy, silent heap of gold and blood at the base of the Weight of Ma'at. Kaelen Voss is defeated.

The last archer, clutching his chest from Cabe’s heart-constriction, sees his captain fall. He doesn't even attempt to reach for his sword. He turns and bolts through the high arched doors of the Archive, his frantic footsteps echoing down the marble halls.

Aele commands Thistle, "Pursue and kill him." Aele tosses Thistle his mace.

Thistle catches the heavy iron mace with a clumsy, frantic grab that nearly sends him toppling over. He looks at the weapon, then at the arched doorway where the terrified archer disappeared, and finally back at Aele. His face is pale, but the "Brotherhood" has evidently sparked something in the scribe—or perhaps it's just the fear of disappointing the Magistrate.

"I... I am the fourth Brother," Thistle repeats, his voice cracking but gaining steel. He grips the mace with both hands, adjusts his spectacles, and sprints toward the exit. "For the Silent Scroll!"

As his frantic footsteps fade down the hallway, the Archive falls into a heavy, resonant silence.

As Kaelen Voss expires at Dorn's feet, the locket you recovered previously pulses with a dark, sickly violet light. It "drinks" the final breath of the formidable foe. The metal feels momentarily cold, then settles into a dormant, protective state.

Status: The Locket is now Charged. It will shatter and restore 2d8 HP to the wearer the moment they drop below 1 HP. Aele gives the now charged silver amulet to Dorn, explains its function, and insists that the fighter wear it.

Dorn looks at the delicate silver locket resting in his calloused, gauntleted palm. He starts to grunt a protest—something about being "hard enough to kill as it is"—but when Aele explains the nature of the "final breath" and the 2d8 healing surge it provides, the fighter’s eyes narrow with pragmatic respect.

"A second wind in a box," Dorn mutters, slipping the chain over his head. The locket settles against his breastplate, tucked safely behind the leather straps of his harness. "Fine. If I'm down, it means the rest of you are in trouble anyway. I'll stay on my feet."

Before approaching the seal, Aele unfurls the vellum document taken from Voss’s pouch. It bears the heavy red wax seal of the High Magistrate of Gosterwick.

The letter officially authorizes Kaelen Voss and "The Gilded" to recover "all displaced Imperial assets, specifically primary land-grant cylinders and tithe-records," on behalf of the city-state. It promises a 20% finder's fee and, more tellingly, a full pardon for Voss's previous crimes upon successful delivery.

Aele’s Insight: This isn't just a tomb-robbery. Gosterwick is looking for legal leverage to claim territories around Arden Vul. If these maps are "First Dynasty," they might pre-date current borders, giving Gosterwick a "divine right" to expand their taxes.
