Thutmose, an awakened ancient priest of Thoth, is the party's newest contact and NPC benefactor. He has tasked this with the time-sensitive task of unclogging the Governor Valve to prevent disaster in this sector of Arden Vul. The Fungal Heart has grown over the obsidian plates of the valve, physically wedging them shut. Without the valve’s ability to "govern" or release steam, the pressure in the lower boilers is climbing toward a critical explosion.
The Governor Valve is located at the apex of the primary vertical maintenance shaft, approximately 200 feet above the lower Pump Station floors. It serves as the "brain" of the steam-pressure regulation system for this sector of Arden Vul.
The party is currently clinging to iron rungs and narrow maintenance gratings near the top of this massive shaft. The air here is thin, sweltering, and currently filled with the toxic mustard gas being vented by the Fungal Heart.
Ridding the valve of the Fungal Heart is not just a matter of "cleaning"; it is a race against a mechanical and environmental catastrophe.
Aele clings to the rungs. "We must make Hastle! The regulation system is hard-coded to perform a "pressure flush" shortly. If the valve remains blocked when that flush occurs, the steam will have nowhere to go but back down the shaft or through the pipes, likely rupturing the entire level and boiling us alive!"
Thistle cries out, "I can't hold out much longer! My limbs are shaking and I cannot see for this noxious gas!" The young Thothian enters a fit of coughing. Cabe longs to aid the young man, but cannot reach Thistle via the blood-bond.
"It's the Fungal Heart. It's creating spores or some sort of gas," Dorn yells, still climbing. Finally, the heroes reach the summit of the shaft. Aele shouts through the blinding, eye-watering and cough-inducing mustard-colored gas, "Dorn! The cylinders show the primary gear is just behind the central node of that thing! One good strike should loosen the obsidian plates enough for me to get the key in!"
Dorn has successfully "pruned" the Fungal Heart. The Silver Keyhole is exposed, but the remaining mass of the Heart is pulsing with a rhythmic, angry thrum. It’s preparing a retaliatory burst of spores.
Aele (holding the Silver Valve Key and the Sigil): "The pressure is screaming in the pipes! I need to get this key in now, but the vibration is too much—I can't get a steady hand!"
Cabe uses his blood-bond to shield Aele from the coming retaliatory blast from the Fungal Heart, while Dorn uses his great strength to hold the vibrating valve in order to help Aele insert the key.
As the Fungal Heart swells to release its caustic spores, Cabe focuses his will on Aele. Because they are within 90 feet, he attunes the bond as a free action. When the retaliatory blast hits Aele, the damage is instantly shunted to Cabe.
Regeneration: Cabe’s passive 1 HP/round recovery will begin ticking the moment he absorbs this strike.
Note: Any damage taken will be subtracted from Cabe’s 57 HP (unless he has Temporary HP from a recent Suck Their Marrow).
Dorn sheathes Swift (or holds it in his off-hand) and clamps his hands onto the vibrating obsidian housing. With his 18 Strength, he exerts massive pressure to counteract the harmonic resonance of the steam pipes.
Dorn struggles with the massively vibrating gear. Despite his great strength, he is not immune to the jarring effect of the vibration itself. Thistle's concern for his friends (and his own life) trigger his psionic potential at a visceral level, and he mentally adds his support to Dorn's physical effort. Given that he's currently physical taxed, Thistle must spend a Fortune Point to maintain concentration.
With Thistle's aid, Dorn’s intervention effectively negates the "Vibration Penalty," granting Aele a significant +4 bonus (or Advantage) on his attempt to seat the key. With the housing stabilized and the spores being magically "wicked" away by Cabe, Aele has a clear, albeit brief, window to insert the Silver Valve Key.
The Fungal Heart erupts in a cloud of violet, acidic dust. Aele is engulfed, but instead of screaming in pain, he feels only a faint warmth as the Blood-Bond transfers the burning sensation to Cabe, who grunts but holds his position.
Simultaneously, Aele slides the Silver Valve Key into the glinting lock. With a heavy clack, the silver alloy bites into the ancient Thothian gears.
- Pressure Gauge: Dropping slowly from the "Redline."
- The Clock: 8 minutes remain until the scheduled steam flush.
- Cabe's Health: Takes 1d6 acid damage from the spores (shunted from Aele)
The valve begins to turn, and the rhythmic ticking of the Violet Eye mechanism in the adjacent room suddenly changes tempo, syncing with the now-steady flow of the Pump Station.
However, the Fungal Heart isn't dead—it is recoiling and shrinking away from the silver key, preparing to drop its entire mass down the shaft toward the rest of the party...
Thistle senses the exact moment when the fungoid mass 'turns loose' and drops. The young Thothian's mind reacts instinctively, using a psionic power of which Thistle was heretofore unaware (Levitation) and he slows the mass enough that Dorn and Aele can attack it with Swift and with radiant energy, respectively. As Aele directs a focused burst onto the growth, Thistle can feel the growth dying. Even its deepest regenerative kernel is cooked and becomes non-functional.
In the high-pressure environment of the vertical shaft, his Psionic Resilience has blossomed into an active, conscious control over gravity. By catching the falling mass in a localized psionic "cradle," Thistle creates the perfect stationary target for the front-liners to finish the job. Thistle instinctively makes his DC 9 Constitution check (with his 13 Con). He succeeds, catching the several-hundred-pound mass in mid-air. The effort strains his mind, but it keeps the caustic growth from smashing into the lower party members.
Dorn doesn't hesitate. Leveraging his 18 Strength and the Great Strike bonus, he delivers a massive horizontal cleave. Swift passes through the suspended fungus, bisecting the core. Aele's surge, focused through the heart-seed scarab, withers the heart of the fungal monstrosity, turning it to ash.
The Governor Valve is now clear. The rhythmic ticking from the Violet Eye tank in the adjacent room settles into a steady, non-threatening hum as the pressure equalization is completed.
As the mustard gas dissipates, The Brothers can see the path forward clearly. The Silver Valve Key remains seated in the lock, serving as a permanent anchor for the sector's stability.
Aele notices that Thutmose’s Sigil has stopped pulsing red and is now a steady, calm white. The way to the Hall of Records is likely no longer blocked by environmental hazards.
The Clock: The "Steam Flush" occurs in 7 minutes, but with the valve open, it will be a controlled release that safely clears the pipes rather than a lethal explosion.
With the vials secured and the steam venting safely, the air in the marbled halls is finally clear enough to see the intricate carvings on the walls. You are standing before the threshold of the Pedestal Room, where the Violet Eye floats.
Beyond this room lies the entrance to the Hall of Records. Aele remembers from the Sovereign's instructions that the Heart-Seed Scarab is the only physical key capable of bypassing the "Weight of Ma’at" seal that guards the archives.
Aele studies his Resonant Map and then their immediate surroundings. "The eye is steady now. It seems its health was indeed a reflection of the station’s equilibrium. If we move quickly, we can reach the seal before the next patrol cycle of the fungal constructs."
While Dorn and Cabe keep watch at the door, Aele and Thistle move among the rows of jars with practiced scholarly caution. Aele’s Heart-Seed Scarab pulses with a soft amber light, reflecting off the polished marble of the jars, while Thistle uses his nascent Levitation to reach the higher shelves without needing a ladder.
As the two clerics unseal the wax-topped jars, they find that most contain the expected biological remains of high-ranking Thothian officials—preserved livers, lungs, and hearts. However, interspersed among the anatomical remains, they discover several vessels filled with preserved alchemical substances.
Aele’s Savant knack and Thistle's high Intelligence allow them to identify the following items from the collection:
| Item | Type | Effect/Use |
|---|---|---|
| Dust of the Index | Powder (4 pouches) | When tossed into the air, it reveals hidden magical scripts or invisible objects for 1 turn |
| Oil of Ma'at | Oil (1 vial) Can be applied to a weapon | for the next 3 rounds, the weapon ignores the physical resistances of Undead or Construct creatures |
| Unguent of the Scribe | Unguent (3 jars) | If applied to the eyes, the user can read any non-magical language for 1 hour |
| Potion of the Deep Breath | Potion (4 vials) | Grants the drinker immunity to toxic gases and the ability to breathe underwater for 10 hours |
Aele holds up one of the vials: "Ten hours... Thistle, this isn't just a safety measure. With this, we don't have to rush the Hall of Records. We can take the time to properly catalog what we find without the miasma rotting our lungs."
As you stash the four pouches of Dust of the Index, you notice the Violet Eye remains fixated on the Heart-Seed Scarab. The psychic hum Thistle felt earlier grows more rhythmic, almost like a heartbeat.
Ahead, the marbled hall terminates at a massive, seamless door of white limestone. Carved into the center of the door is a giant set of scales—the Weight of Ma’at. There is no keyhole, only a circular indentation exactly the size of Aele’s agate scarab.
While Cabe uses an application of the Dust of the Index and then searches for magical glyphs and traps, Aele and Thistle combine their wills and use the Heart-Seed Scarab to attempt communication with the Violet Eye.
As the dust hangs in the air, it catches on several "invisible" ley lines. Cabe spots a faint, jagged orange glow around the hinges of the door—a Feedback Glyph. If the door were forced without the Scarab, this glyph would likely discharge a massive blast of force or lightning. Cabe confirms there are no mechanical pressure plates. The danger is purely magical.
Aele holds the Heart-Seed Scarab aloft, its internal amber light pulsing like a beacon. Thistle closes his eyes, extending his Psionic Resilience outward to act as a bridge between Aele’s divine focus and the Eye’s alien consciousness.
The psychic hum in Thistle's mind crystallizes into a series of flickering images:
- A Great Drought: The Hall of Records being sealed as the Thothian Empire began to fade.
- The Watcher: The Violet Eye was not a prisoner; it was a volunteer, an "Archivist of the Unblinking Gaze" meant to ensure the records were never tampered with by the Fungal Court.
- The Recognition: The Eye recognizes the "Heart-Seed" not just as a key, but as a sign of the Sovereign's favor.
A voice like dry parchment echoes in the priests' minds: "The weight is balanced. The records are parched. Feed the cylinders to the Great Engine, and the history of Arden Vul shall speak once more."
After Cabe makes his report on traps and glyphs, Aele says, "We must give the Basalt Cylinders to the Great Engine."
Dorn says, "If you say so, but are they full of information you'd like to spend years studying?"
"Indeed, but they are critically needed here. For me, they contain Lore, but for Arden Vul, the cylinders are very high density storage devices, holding the history of the Halls, and myriad critical data."
Aele adds, "It’s a library that requires a power source. The Cylinders hold the knowledge, but the Engine holds the voice. If we don't find this Engine, we're just carrying very expensive paperweights."
Our heroes stand at the threshold of the Weight of Ma'at. Cabe has flagged the Feedback Glyph, and the party knows their objective: find the Engine and "feed" it the history of Arden Vul.
As Aele presses the Heart-Seed Scarab into the circular indentation, the translucent green agate begins to pulse in perfect synchronization with the internal amber light. The effect is immediate.
The jagged orange glow of the Feedback Glyph that Cabe identified doesn't explode; instead, the energy is sucked into the scarab, turning the amber light into a bright, steady gold.
The massive stone scales carved into the door begin to move. The "heart" side of the scale sinks as the "feather" side rises, signifying that the party’s intent has been weighed and found "light as truth." With a sound like grinding mountains, the limestone slabs retract—not outward or inward, but sliding into the walls using a series of perfectly counterweighted pulleys.
As the doors fully retract, a cool, dry breeze—scented with old cedar and ozone—rushes out. You are looking into the Hall of Cylinders.
Unlike the marbled halls outside, this room is circular and lined from floor to ceiling with thousands of vertical honeycomb-like slots. Most are empty, but some still hold basalt tubes similar to the ones Dorn is carrying. In the center of the room stands the Great Engine — a massive pillar of obsidian and bronze, surrounded by a ring of three brass podiums. At the top of the pillar is a crystal lens the size of a man’s head, currently dark.
Each of the three podiums has a hollowed-out "sleeve" designed to receive a Basalt Cylinder.
The Power: Thin lines of silver inlay run from the base of the podiums toward the central pillar.
Aele steps into the room, his boots clicking on the polished obsidian floor. He notices that the Heart-Seed Scarab is still in the door behind them. To keep the door open and the "Weight of Ma'at" balanced, the scarab must remain seated in the external lock.
Aele says, "Dorn, the Engine is ready. We have three slots and three cylinders. But be careful—the records say the Engine requires 'balance.' If we feed it the wrong sequence, we might wake more than just the history of this place."
Dorn nods, then lays out the three cylinders on the stone floor, and the heroes squat and examine them carefully. They are not identical. "Look here," Dorn says. "This one is marked with a flowing wave on the side." He turns it. "And there's a gear icon at its base." Aele strokes his chin, thinking, but quickly Cabe says, "Oh, that's probably for the Pump Station."
"I think you're right!" Thistle says to Cabe, "and look at this cylinder. See the icon? That looks like a steam vent to me."
Aele takes up the third cylinder. "Very good, boys. And this one is marked with the Eye and a stylus."
"Those icons represent knowledge and records," Thistle says, drawing upon his years of cataloguing ancient Thothian works. "What is the correct order?"
Aele smiles, and his confidence shows that he knows — or thinks he knows — the answer: "The schematics showed a Linear Flow: Power (the Pump Station) → Regulation (Valve) → Result (Records)."
"I get it," Cabe enthuses. "The Governor Valve that we cleared of the fungal growth — it's the regulator between the Pump Station's power and the vast knowledge contained here."
"The Engine is a circuit. If we put the 'Result' (Records) where the 'Source' (Pumps) should be, the feedback could shatter the crystal lens." He retrieves the Unguent of the Scribe now to read the base of the podiums. Since the unguent allows him to read any non-magical language for an hour, he can confirm if the podiums are labeled "Source," "Balance," and "Manifest."
"I’ve got them ready. Aele, just give me the word," Dorn says. "I don't want to be the one who accidentally blows up the history of the world because I mixed up the 'Pump' and the 'Eye'."
'There can be no doubt.' He points to each sleeve and its corresponding inscription one at a time. 'The Breath of the Abyss' is the Pump Station, 'The Heart that Measures' is The Governor Valve, and 'The Memory of the Stone' indicates The Records."
"The order is confirmed. It follows the path of the water and the steam we just restored. Dorn, seat them in that order—left, then center, then right. Thistle, stand back; once the 'Memory' is seated, the lens will likely activate."
Dorn steps forward, his massive frame casting a shadow over the obsidian podiums. With the precision of a seasoned thief and the strength of a frontline fighter, he slides the three Basalt Cylinders into their respective sleeves: Left, Center, and Right.
As the third cylinder—the Memory of the Stone—is seated, the "clunk" of stone on bronze echoes through the circular hall. For a heartbeat, there is silence. Then, the silver inlay on the floor flares with a brilliant gold light, drawing power from the Heart-Seed Scarab at the door.
A low-frequency vibration begins to shake the floor. Thistle feels it first in his teeth—the psionic "echoes" mentioned in the warning.
The massive crystal lens atop the central pillar ignites with a cold, blue radiance. It rotates 360 degrees, scanning the thousands of empty honeycomb slots in the walls. The lens projects a series of "Hard-Light" images into the center of the room. This isn't just a map; it's a chronological playback of the sector's history.
The heroes are treated to their first (and perhaps last) holographic light-show.
They watch as the Hall of Records is abandoned. High priests in emerald robes are seen placing the Violet Eye into its tank, whispering that the "Fungal Blight" from the lower levels (the Fungal Court) was beginning to rot the very history of the empire.
The map zooms into a specific sub-level of the Hall of Records. It highlights a hidden chamber behind the "Statue of the Weighing of the Heart." The records indicate this vault contains the "Sun-Disk of Thoth," a legendary artifact used to purify stagnant air.
The Engine flickers red for a moment. It shows a guardian—a Thothian Golem made of gold and glass—that only activates if the "Weight of Ma'at" (the Scarab) is removed from the door while the Engine is running.
The air in the room is now ionized and crackling with energy. The Great Engine is currently "hot"—it is actively outputting the data stored in the cylinders.
Aele shouts over the energetic hum, "Dorn! The map shows the treasury is just one level down! If we leave the Scarab in the door, we can reach it before the Golem wakes. But if we pull it out, the doors lock and the guardian activates!"
"Well that's a no-brainer then. Let's beat feet!" Dorn shouts.
